SJSU Class of 2027 Official Thread

No it means that as an OOS applicant, the CSU application is not redirected to another CSU campus which has room available.

SJSU states on their website that alternate major consideration is not a guarantee even if the applicant meets the impaction index threshold. The alternate major needs to have enrollment spots available to accept the applicants denied their first choice.

California applicants have a redirection guarantee.

If you are a first-time freshman, upper-division transfer student or an** Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) student** applying to the CSU and you are a California resident for tuition purposes, CSU-eligible and have not been admitted to any CSU to which you applied, there is the chance that the campus(es) you applied to don’t have the capacity to admit more students.

Where can you find this on MySJSU. Have been trying to navigate the site and did not see any status on admissions. There is a “next step” some where asking to check off “intent to attend” and also option to pay. Is this for eveyone or only to admitted students, which still did not find where these announcements will be. Thank you.

Can you tell me where you can find the decision information under MySJSU? So many icons not sure how to navigate.

Alt major would be considered only if there IS additional capacity in that major after accommodating students that selected it as their primary choice (all this assuming thresholds are met). So basically I guess that for those of us with a second kid who may apply in a few years, the lesson here is to possibly consider putting a non-impacted major as 2nd choice (like how SDSU instructs to pick a non-impacted major as alt). Would you agree?

SDSU does not consider alternate majors. You are thinking of UCSD which recommends selecting a non-capped major as an alternate if applying to a Capped Major.

Yes, it is important to review the previous year thresholds to determine which majors can have open spots. All majors at SJSU are impacted, just some more than others.

My bad…yes, I meant UCSD.

Son admitted with an email last night. Software Engineering; I knew ahead of time that he probably wouldn’t make the CS cut off & counseled him to choose an alternate major.

Weighted: 4.25
UW: 3.9
Lots of A-G courses, 5 APs & 1 honors (Math)

So far son is 5-5 on the CSUs he applied to: Chico, SDSU, CSULB, CPP & now here.
All are CS or adjacent, except for CSULB, where he chose Applied Math. Now just waiting on SLO and the UCs, but already really pleased at some great options. (And kind of dreading making a decision.)

Congrats. Impressive GPA especially if you have a lot of A-G courses. Do you mind sharing how many in 10-11?
if 9-11 GPA is in the similar ballpark he should have good chance in SLO as well.

Between 10-11 there are 13 A-G, I believe (across 2 semesters). Honestly, except for the PE requirement, I think all his HS courses have counted as A-G.

They do not state clearly anywhere how the math GPA is calculated. From my understanding, they add in weighted 10th-11th Math GPA.

Can no longer edit my previous posts, so for clarification & future applicants:
UW GPA is actually 3.86, and total A-G is somewhere around 35-37 “years,” to answer the above question.

Did anyone’s kid receive an offer for Spartan Pathways? Jr. was rejected for CS about 3 weeks ago but then received an offer to “re-apply” with 2 LOR and an essay as an undeclared applicant. He’d then have to select a major by end of his 2nd year. Seems like declaring CS would be possible but the cutoff appears to be in the 3.8-ish area. His long term goal is front end development. Anyone taking this path or something similar?

Another downside risk is that the Pathways decisions aren’t returned till April/early May - which is cutting it close re other CSU’s 5/1 SIR deadline.

I dont know if this helps your decision as far as major choice if you re-apply. D applied for CS with 3.92 CSU GPA even though she would not have made it knowing last year’s impaction thresholds. Once we applied, SJSU sent an email letting us know to change the major if we wanted to (before an admission decision was made). Thats when she changed from CS to Comp Eng…the impaction threshold was even higher but they would consider math GPA. Her math grades are not great but she had accelerated in math throughout and that went well and she was admitted to Comp Eng. Now that the 2023 impaction thresholds are out I can see that she would not have made the CS or Software Eng threshold.

It sounds like you dont lose anything by the pathway decision if you have to apply now and anyway have till May 1st. If you apply and get in, you will have one more option. Good luck !

Great acceptance rate! My son was accepted to SJSU for SE also. We live in the East Bay and he’s considering this option bc of the Silicon Valley opportunities. Im trying to find other SE families. The location is our only con, he really wants a beach opportunity- both my husband and I went to school in SoCal

My son was also admitted under SE, but the location is a big negative for him. It’s a really hard decision!

Any opinions on the biomedical engineering program? Is class size for GE under 100 kids? Is it a relatively friendly, collaborative environment?

All engineering programs are strong at SJSU.

When I asked about the class size question at one of their presentations, they said 5% of GE classes are over 100; most classes are about 39.

My son got accepted at SJSU CS major. How is CS at SJSU?
We have to decide between the following schools. Please guide:
SJSU(CS)
SDSU(CS)
ASU(CS-Barrett Honors).

My D23 got accepted at SJSU Climate Science major. I don’t know much about this major compared to Environmental science and Environmental Biology.

Congrats on your son’s acceptances! My son will also be weighing decisions between SJSU & SDSU (amongst some other great choices). I believe the program at San Jose is considered the better option, especially because of the location, offering so much access to all of Silicon Valley.

Ultimately it comes to which campus is a better fit overall. We are closer to San Diego, but son is curious about the more urban/NorCal vibe of SJSU.
