All three colleges you list have strong CS programs. The edge that SJSU has over the others is its silicon valley location. Good luck with your decision.
How is the Mechanical Engineering program at SJSU??
Yeah we went for a dorm tour yesterday and the campus is soooooo small!! It doesn’t feel like ‘college’ to me at all!! The pros I’d say are: GE class size: up to 125 but the commuters don’t show up so actual can feel less.
Non GE avg class size 32
Engineering (my son is SE) - fantastic departure and internship connections, jobs after college.
Campus: easy to get a job on campus
Cons - our personal opinion
SMALL campus
Freshman housing NOT guaranteed this year
( but applications opened 2 days ago so if you get in application NOW you will get housing and you can apply without officially accepting admissions)
Social scene - apparently non existent BUT if you actively seek it, you will find your crew.
SJSU has a very large commuter student population. But they have over 400 clubs. So as long as the student is involved in clubs after class, their experience can be pretty social. There are also lots of events on campus…SJSU has a very diverse campus and they always have and celebrate different cultural events etc.
Why don’t commuter students show up for the lecture classes? D got in as bioengineering and I’m wondering how it easy is it to change within the engineering dept (not to CE).
Son was accepted for ME major on 2/9. He was admitted by UCLA last Friday. It took us a while to figure out how to do a withdraw. We hope the seat goes to an applicant still waiting.
Best wishes!
I don’t know why students don’t show up. We spoke with several students as we walked around, everyone was really friendly and open to answer questions. We even spoke to a professor there. I would say it is all what you want to make from the experience. My son looks for the opportunity and he came out of those conversations with two pros: easier to meet people with a similar work ethic and social lifestyle coupled with increased access to their professor. My sim is very self regulated - unlike my other two kids and he knows how to balance what he needs to do vs wants to do. Congratulations for your son. I have no idea how easy it is to change majors within engineering- I honestly don’t think too hard.
Congrats! Im thinking to apply to data science too. Isn’t it a new program at sjsu? Is that why the impaction index is so low? Also what do u think about ds vs cs?
How many advanced math classes did he take?
Did she get in?
How can you get SJSU to send you an email early if you aren’t meeting the impaction threshold? Is there something you have to do like apply early?
He had 5 years of math on his CSU application, which included Geometry in middle school. Also in there was AP Calc AB/BC and honors class of Diff Equations/Linear in Senior year.
My friend’s daughter did not get in SJSU. It turned out that instead of selecting for “Computer Engineering”, she selected “Computer Science”. As a result, she probably ended up not making the impaction factor cutoff.
