Can anyone who is currently living on campus at San Jose State tell me if they had trouble getting into the dorm of their choice? Are there on campus housing shortages? My D applied to SJSU as a freshman for Fall 2018, has not yet been accepted (although her EI is 4460), and is worried about getting on campus housing. She’s also concerned that she would be forced to find off campus housing her second year in any event. Can anyone speak to the housing process and the dorms at SJSU?
If you don’t live in one of the excluded cities (see my reply to your other post) and apply for housing soon after the application opens, I’m sure she’ll get a room.
There were definitely shortages this year. I believe some freshmen were forced to find off-campus housing, but that was primarily because they applied late for housing.
We live in one of the excluded cities but my D applied the day the application opened and she got a room this year.
I don’t have any information about housing for second year, the school hasn’t provided much information about that yet. The application for returning students is supposed to open early next month.
I did not, but that is only because we had such few freshman in comparison to other classes in my cohort (3,208), with (1,861, to be exact). In comparison to the fall 2017 cohort, there were 4,489 incoming freshman, and 54% of lived on-campus (2,424, on the money). There was a significant amount of freshmen who had to live off-campus. It really depends on each cohort, and SJSU does state that there is no guarantee that a freshman can live on-campus, although there is usually (and historically) enough room. Last year was just a fluke because our admissions committee accepted too many people.
Your daughter needs to decide quick once she gets all of her college decisions. If she goes to SJSU, apply for on-campus housing asap. I would imagine and hope that there would be less people coming in as freshmen next year, though.
@DumbleDad There is housing called “CVB” that is open to sophomores and above. There should have been information sent out by now, and a newsletter should be sent to each resident by the very beginning of March. Make sure your daughter applies as soon as possible if she is going to live on-campus again.
