SJSU or wait for Cal Poly SLO Comp. Engineering?

I was accepted into SJSU as a Computer Engineering transfer student for Fall 2010, but I am still waiting on Cal Poly SLO's response. I highly doubt that I will be accepted because I am missing my 3rd semester of Calc Physics, which is one of their recommendations upon transferring. However, if I wait until next year to reapply to Cal Poly, I am quite confident that I will be admitted, as I spoke with one of the transfer advisors of Cal Poly. Based on the economy, I'm leaning towards waiting for Cal Poly, so I can look for an internship in the meantime to strengthen my hands on experience. Do you guys think it's worth the wait or should I just go to SJSU?

I’m a 2nd year IE at CP, hometown SJ.

Cal Poly will definitely get you the one-up on SJSU as far as employment/work experience. CPE is a bit hardcore though, from what I heard from my friends. SJSU also is not bad, because of all the local networking you can do, but I’m not sure how big the job fairs are over there. The one big plus at CP is that our once a quarter job fair is huge…lots of opportunity to connect and get in. So I guess it kinda depends on what you want. If you transfer here next year, be prepared to stay 2+ more years. SJSU will get you out and working sooner.

I just finally got notice that I wasn’t accepted into Cal Poly as expected, so now I’m still stuck on the same dilemma boat. If I wait until next year to reapply, I have a shot at UC Berkeley and Cal Poly because all of my courses will be completed. Do you guys think I should just go with SJSU or should I stick it out and wait? Thanks

I say get in while you can. You will kick yourself for not going AND not being able to find an internship. Not to mention you can’t be sure that Cal Poly will be accepting transfers or some other fine print hassle

For EE and CompE, no other CSU schools can beat SJSU, mainly because of its location (Silicon Valley). Many students get internships in local high tech companies while in college and get hired upon graduation.

According to rankings from usnews(I’m not sure how accurate they are), SJSU ranks 5th in Computer Engineering while Cal Poly leads in 3rd. I have a friend that got admitted into Cal Poly with a 3.1 GPA for Software Engineering, but my major is Computer Engineering, so I’m not sure how that affects the situation. My GPA is currently about the same if not higher, but I “expect” my GPA to rise to at least a 3.4 by my next application. I was missing my 3rd semester of Calc Physics on my application and the transfer advisor from Cal Poly told me she was almost positive that I wouldn’t get in because of that due to the fact that it’s a mandatory course.

If I got admitted to SJSU this semester, are there chances that I won’t be readmitted next year? Also, would it look bad on the application if I had a year off before applying? It sounds like SJSU would be the smarter route to take. Does anyone else have an input on whether or not I should transfer or wait?

Sorry about all the questions, but I have about a month to make my final decision and I’m stressed out of my mind. Thank you all very much. I really appreciate it.

Any other opinions on this before I make my final decision?

Be careful! With the budget situation like now, they might only accept community college transferring. No inter transferring!
