Its a toss up between these two universities. I will be a junior transfer into one of these schools coming Fall 2010 and I need some insight of how others feel about the engineering program between these two campuses so I can make a decision, confidently. I have done my research, as according to USNEWS, UCSC > SJSU. Is this true in terms of their electrical/computer engineering program?

What’s the third choice?

go to ucsc

yeah go to ucsc, banana slugs woot.

I would pick ucsc, easily. although banana slugs are a terrible mascot… which is probably why their athletics are lacking :D

I beg to differ. Banana slug is the best UC mascot; it is unique and just plain awesome. Now Stanford’s mascot is horrendous!

Oh, and UCI has the worst mascot. Their mascot is why I did not apply there.

^Agreed. No better mascot than the Banana Slug.

I also have this question. but between sfsu and ucsc. Im 99% sure im going to ucsc. the only people i know who went to sjsu hated it and left to go back to community colleges.

ok i’ll admit that the banana slug is a “novel” mascot. and yeah ant eaters are definitely worse.

zot zot zot …

Well, it looks as if the boards has a unanimous decision. My 3rd choice is UCSD, but that acceptance hasn’t come in yet so far I’m leaning toward UCSC. I just thought since SJSU got 19th nationwide among engineering schools offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees, that there was fighting chance that SJSU’s EE program was better than UCSC.

well here is an unbiased opinion because im going to accept ucsd: go to ucsc, its pretty freakin legit.

PS i still kinda wish i was going to ucsc partially BECAUSE of the banana slug. its awesome.

One of my friends from high school graduated from UCSC in 2007 as a physics major. He’s working at NASA now as a researcher and satellite designer. UCSC, Stanford, and Cal have good connections to the Silicon Valley tech companies so I’d go there as long as you can handle all the forests and hippies.

From what I hear the UCSC EE program is totally legitimate. Check out the curriculum; even for a transfer it’s a massive major. Also, UCSC is fairly connected with all of the Silicon Valley crowd. I hear UCSD is horrible, and UCSC is pretty cool if you find your niche. I think UCSC is becoming a bit more mainstream, which is better for us normal types while the hippie crowd tends to ***** about that. Seriously, go check the place out. It’s rather cold most of the year too, but there’s definitely fun to be had.

If you are accepted to UCSD, would you go there? I would, considering the other two options. UCSD is superior, although I am unsure of its superiority in your specific field. :)

UCSD is superior to both schools for EE.

I am quite aware that UCSD has one of the nations top EE programs, but I’m not sure how much more the cost of living in San Diego is versus San Jose. If its about the same I would definitely attend though. After all, all I’m getting is a B.S. not a graduates degree so I’m kind of on the “I’m not too worried about where I go” boat. I foresee Cal as my ideal graduate college school, so wherever I attend, I’ll just end up trying my best to become the “best of the best, sir, with honors…” (Men In Black) haha

well technically ucsd is in la jolla…if you stay close it’s expensive.

Can someone who actually attended UCSC of SJSU EE say what their experience has been?

you are going to get pretty one sided answers asking on the UC transfer thread =p

SJSU does have great engineering programs…
