I am from a big city and I ride my bike everywhere. When I visited Cornell, I asked the tour guide why no one rides bikes and he said it's because (1) the campus is kind of like a valley--there's a dip in the middle so you're pretty much guaranteed to ride uphill--and (2) it snows a lot.

So I want to bring my skateboard instead, but is it common to ride skateboards at Cornell? I don't want to die getting hit by angry drivers or get mean looks from people who don't like skateboards. BUT I'm a slow walker and I'm really good at MISSING buses so I do want something to ride around campus, preferably a skateboard over a bike.

So yeah..that's my question: do people ride skateboards at Cornell? This will help me decide if I want to buy new parts for mine. THANK YOU!!!

I’m not sure I agree with your initial premise, or your tour guide’s answer. When I attended I knew several kids who rode bikes. There is a bike shop in Collegetown, as there was when I was there, if nobody was biking it could not stay in business. So it seems to me that some people must still bike there.

However the tour guide’s answer would be accurate as to why there aren’t more people riding bikes. To ride a bike there you have to be in good shape, because of the hills. And you probably don’t want to be living in lower Collegetown.

I don’t know about skateboarders. The weather is not conducive to bikers for about six months of the year. I would think that would discourage skateboarders as well, during those same periods.

Maybe you might follow up by calling The Bike Rack in collegetown and asking them your questions.

if you can handle the hills bring your bike. i think the freshman dorms have places to store them in the winter.

if you don’t want to bike uphill a lot bring your skateboard. i always see people longboarding when the weather is nice. unless you’re a maniac on a skateboard no one will care.

there aren’t lots of angry drivers as long as you aren’t darting out in front of them when they have the right of way. most cars can’t go too fast anyway because cornell has so many crosswalks and people j-walk all the time.
