Sketchy part of town?

"the blueprints show the campus directly across for 3 housing projects. maybe they'll put up a 20 foot ivy blanketed wall and perhaps a mote...."

with a dragon, don't forget mote-ee the dragon. I think they should put an endless fence all along the frontier, put a couple of lion-men in there who threaten to shoot people attempting to cross over - although these might never get to speak on campus.

haha lion men.
this will be in the brochure displaying our new security... dare to cross onto campus now mr. thug life?

The word you guys are looking for is MOAT. A mote is a speck of something. Like dust.

Before you criticize the mote of dust in another's eye, first remove the plank of wood in your own, etc.

I have never been N of 125 and E of lex (4th ave), I didn't really know if it was particularly dangerous, there simply was never an occasion when I've needed or wanted to go there. I can't see pull factors to the area, that are not replicated elsewhere, close-by. morningside might take safest ivy neighborhood after Dartmouth's, Not sure about cornell's.

As with any moderately dangerous place, you're safe every time but the one that matters. Crime is a random thing, low odds, and in a sense could happen any time of day. The important thing is to put yourself in a situation that minimizes your chances of anything bad happening. With parts of spanish harlem - go over to 1st ave and 100th or so - you can just feel the lack of investment in the neighborhood, and it is barren and creepy at night. You can tell just from the rents, which are lower than Astoria Queens.

Very safe for an urban setting. I attended Columbia in the 1980s (pre-Giuliani) when the neighborhood was much worse. Returning back in 2003, I was astounded by the cleanliness and security arrangements on campus. Venturing off campus also gave me a good sense of security.

is that you Barack?!? and how come you didn't tell us you came back in 2003?

We don't have a moat, but we certainly have a giant wall separating Morningside Heights and Harlem in Morningside Park.

See:

yes, that is indeed quite the great wall. are they going to construct something similar in manhattanville? columbia might have some power but they cannot take over the projects without alot of resentment...
