In western NC there are mountains with several ski resorts. My favorite is Beech Mountain that is right outside of Banner Elk, NC. It has a high speed quad. ski lift that makes it nicer compared to some of the other slopes. There is also Sugar Mtn., outside of Banner Elk, and there is Appalachian Ski Resort in Boone, NC. This would probably be about a 2.5-3 hour drive from Durham though.
One could drive north to Wintergreen in Virginia. It's about 30 miles south of Charlottesville. From Durham, I'd guess that drive would also be about 3 hours.
No other resorts are popping into my mind at present. Maybe other folks will know of other places.

Probably the best resort on the east coast south of Washington DC is Sugar Mtn in W. VA. I've never been there, but I've heard that it gets the best snow in this area of the country... I have been to Beech, though, and it is nice.

Snowshoe in WV is good, but is a long ride. Beech is your best bet.

there aren't a lot of ski resorts that are close to durham...i actually work at Wintergreen, which was mentioned above, but it would certainly be at least a 3 hour drive from Duke, so it's not like you could go skiing for the day and then come back.

I meant Snowshoe not sugar mtn in my previous post.

oh man, its gonna have to be a long drive there and back every morning and night.
i guess its much closer then living in queensland. (about 17-20 hours drive to the snowy mountains)
thanks for the post guys

cheers

I've heard there's some good skiing to be had in Tasmania.
