Hope to major in Biology
1940/2400 SAT
630 Maths II, 660 Biology-M SAT II
GPA = my school doesn't do GPAs. I got 3 As at A-levels, and 2 As at AS-level (if you know the British system)
Rank = my school doesn't rank.
Not many ECs, I play an instrument, do some career shadowing and lots of community service around Asia, that's it.

Why Skidmore essays:
1) I talked about how I liked to cook and what that has taught me about portraying myself creatively.
2) I can't remember this one too well, but I thought it was crap. I think I talked about the community at Skidmore, and how it is diverse (which it isn't, really) and how that will help me pursue my named goals.

I'm so sorry DeutscheMan :(. But you got an Emmy nomination?? WOW!

Cathy G. Not sure yet, I guess I have to wait for the admissions package in the post. I don't think I got any merit aid because I didn't apply for any, and I won't get any FA being an international and all.

My D has been accepted. :) But the financial aid doesn't compare to some of her West Coast choices. :( So I don't think Skidmore will advance to her Final Decision Round.

Our daughter just received a waitlist notification from Skidmore today. She is greatly disappointed as this is her #1 choice. She remains hopeful that she will be admitted, although the letter was not terribly positive. In past years, Skidmore has admitted between 0 and 80 students from the wait list, and this year they admitted about 10% of applicants. Well, we thought the waiting would be over, but apparently not.

I have a feeling that we will get caught in a bit of a Catch-22 come May 1, when deposits are due at most colleges. We will probably have to pay a non-refundable deposit elsewhere while we wait on Skidmore. Sigh.

My S was waitlisted as well and I was so surprised because his SATs were fairly high (2130) and his ACT score was 33. Also surprising was that I got into Skidmore 25 years ago with a B average and low SAT scores of 1100. How things have changed! We visited but didn't have an admissions interview. He also did not check the box to go to London Freshman year. Maybe that had something to do with it. I don't think he's going to opt to remain on the waitlist. He received a nice package from another school. Good luck to you and your daughter!

I got my acceptance package today and was pretty surprised. The financial aid was outstanding, they want to cover just about everything except 2,000 in work-study and another 2,000 in loans. There was also a handwritten note on my acceptance letter and an invite to the Honors program. I'm not sure if either of these facets were unique, but on the whole they did make me feel fairly special. I still probably will not attend Skidmore at this point, but appreciate the effort and am now going to give it some more thought that I may have.

For everyone accepted, congratulations! For those less lucky, I am sure you will be fine in time.

Regarding the acceptance rate postings above:

According to Skidmore they had 64,000 applicants for 650 spots. That in itself would be around 10%. HOWEVER, it is quite possible that they accepted far more than they have spots for as they realize that some students will not accept their offer. If anyone knows the number of total applicants that they accepted it would be helpful to those on the waitlist. If the acceptance rate is 30% as posted above that would mean that 1300 students would have to turn down their acceptance for Skidmore to go to the waitlist.

Good Luck to All - I hope it turns out like all would like.

Where do you find the information about how many applications they had and how many spots? If it's really 64,000, then I guess it was an honor to be waitlisted! Just looking for the silver lining here.

That's 28% of 37% of 6,400, the total number of applicants.

(Even at a school like Princeton, 3 of every 10 acceptees choose to attend elsewhere).

At Skidmore, more than 2/3 of those accepted don't enroll. In rough numbers, with 640 spots in the freshman class, they accepted around 2368, expecting, based on their history, that 28%, or about 644, will say "yes" to them.

Which means that waitlisted kids need to hope that more than about 1724 acceptees say "no, thanks," and enroll elsewhere.

In the wait list letter from Skidmore, they wrote, "This year our decisions were particularly difficult because the applicant pool was one of the strongest and largest in Skidmore history. Nearly 6,400 students applied for a first-year class of 650, making this one of the most competitive years in the College's history"

I see how they would need to actually accept more than 650. Its pretty amazing that only 28% of those accepted choose to enroll. I guess among many accepted students' list of potential colleges, Skidmore is not at the top. For my wait-listed daughter, Skidmore was her 'reach' school, and one she would dearly love to attend. Here's hoping for 1725 acceptees to say 'no"!

The last unfortunate item in the Skidmore wait list letter was a Q & A sheet that indicated that wait-listed students may not end up receiving any financial aid. That would be the final killer for us, if our daughter did get in but only at $50k/yr.
