Skidmore Class of 2017 RD Thread

What are your scores guys who are applying skidmore RD and do you think you will be accepted?

I applied RD (still a month to go for decisions, ugh) and I think my application was pretty solid (I wouldn’t be really surprised if I was waitlisted, but I would be surprised if I was rejected). My SAT score was right at 2000 and my extracurriculars revolved around my academic interests, so hopefully I’ll be accepted. Then again, the applicant pool is much larger this year, so who knows what’ll happen.

haha, critmaster, what kind of question is that? I hope to be accepted, but mainly because of my financial aid it’s like a lottery for me

genetiguy, I’d like to be as optimistic as you are :D

Piojac, I think I can say I’m in the same boat as you when it comes to financial aid. That may be one reason I’d get rejected for… heh.

My son applied RD and today he received an e mail starting “Congratulations from Skidmore College” The official acceptance package will be sent out on March 22nd. He is invited to attend the 3 day long Discovery Tour (Campus visit) in April, transportation cost will be paid by Skidmore. (He lives abroad, an international applicant)
This is the first good news, after his failutre in EA in December. We didn’t know Skidmore got so many applicants this year. Feel so lucky.

i got the same message as Vonama! im still deciding whether i want to go to the discovery tour

Congratulation to you! My son has never visited US campus, so he is planning to go there. However, he is still waiting for decisions from many other schools within a couple of weeks. Are you also waiting for other decisions?

I’m really nervous about the increase in applications. When I visited campus, an admissions officer told us that the year they had 7316 applications (class of 2012) they had a 28% acceptance rate. And they have even more this year!

@ vonama : yes, im waiting for more notifications on march 28, and im really nervous!! haha

It seems like Skidmore sends out the good news to some applicants prior to the offical notification date. I know some do, but most don’t. I heard Wesleyan did last year. Do you know any others?

I think that what skidmore sent wasnt the official notification, but a likely letter. most colleges send that to students that they really want, for example recruited athletes, women engineerers, underrepresented minorities , etc

Actually, in our case it was not a “likely letter”. It was a very direct offer of admission via email, with of course, the more detailed documentation to arrive by snail mail next week with the shipment of all the letters.

In response to testbulk, Skidmore plans to keep the class size for 2017 basically equivalent to previous years, i.e., they are forecasting a class size of between 580 to 630 per the statement of the Chair of the Alumni Association in February. He also said the following about the diversity of the applicant pool this year:

“This record-breaking applicant pool is also the most diverse in Skidmore’s history. We have received nearly 600 more applications from domestic students of color this year than we did last year, and the number of international students has more than doubled, increasing from 643 last year to 1449 this year (Admissions’ increased outreach has include more overseas visits as well). This year, 29.5% of the domestic applicant pool are students of color compared to 27.3% last year.”

This is one of the great stories of this year’s college application season. Skidmore has a huge opportunity to significantly raise its prominence and academic caliber, and dramatically diversify its student enrollment. Skidmore is looking forward to see how its yield rate (the percent of admitted students who accept admission) turns out. As far as the admissions rate goes, I would predict a 25% to 27% figure, if the yield is expected to be a bit under 30%.

Here’s how Skidmore explains its record-setting number of applications this year, according to John Beckman, Chairman of Skidmore’s Alumni Association Board of Directors:

Some possible contributing factors to this stellar turn around include:
–Inclusion in late summer on Newsweek’s listing of “Happiest Students”
–Newly redesigned Skidmore website
– All the new housing options on campus including Northwoods and the more recent Hillside/Scribner 2.0
– Shortening of Skidmore Supplement to the Common Application, which eliminated 3 additional short answer prompts on our supplement
– Increased outreach:
o Additional admissions staff traveling and recruiting, visited more than 200 additional high schools
o Enhanced school visits with iPads for slide shows of campus and Saratoga
o Expanded purchase of names of potential applicants from College Board Student Search Service, and continued follow up with thousands of non-responders for the first time
o Contracted with outside social media vendors (Cappex, *****) to acquire names of potential applicants
o Translated 15 Admissions web pages into Spanish and Mandarin
o Online community manager position created for increased communication with high school students (Facebook, Twitter, Live Chats)".

Well, considering I’m the exact opposite of a minority… I’m a little worried now. At least they’ll have a really diverse class next year! I know they take pride in their large percentage of international students.

Lol, I think that is rubbish. You know why internationals were so drawn to Skidmore this year that the applications rose from 600 something to 1400 something? It was the US News’ lists “A+ colleges for B students” and “most generous colleges to intl students”. Most intls depend on USNews for a lot of “quick research” and many are B students needing financial aid. I think EVERYONE added Skidmore to his/her list in my school this year after seeing the generosity lol.

The removal of the supplement essays probably was a key factor. Skidmore is a great school, and all it takes to apply is pressing a couple of buttons and paying the app fee. Applying is a no brainer when there’s no supplement essays. If I had to guess, I would think a lot of kids used Skidmore as their safety because it was so simple to apply.

I received good news from Skidmore a good 4 days ago however it was an invitation to a diversity weekend there.
I have a 2000 sat and have taken 5 AP courses (my school only offers 15).

My son got the admission and an invite to the April 10-11 Discover Skidmore overnight trip. All expenses paid. Sounds like you got that, too, but no accrptance letter?

Sent from my ADR6410LVW using CC

were your admissions a formal packet in the snail mail or an email? does anyone have any ideas when the decision letters will go out?
