Wow – congrats Chimmy! e-mail or snail mail – and where are you?
Thank you @mojo60! I live in Japan so it’s an email.
“Saturday morning” mail arrives around 2 PM – I really hope Skidmore snail-mail arrives today — because if it doesn’t there’s no mail Sunday — or Monday because of Presidents’ Day holiday – this constant waiting game is just so stressful…
I got my package today and was accepted. I am all the way on the west coast so I assume most received their decisions by now. The FA was incredible and actually was within $900 of their FA calculator. This is such a privilege and blessing. Good luck to all of you. I know it sounds cliche but my journey happened for a reason. I was deferred ED1 elsewhere but after everything realize that Skidmore is a MUCH better place for me for a variety of reasons.
Deferred with a 34 ACT and a 3.5 at a dual curriculum school.
I did! I got my acceptance letter yesterday.
I received my acceptance yesterday
Where did people apply ED1 ? Applied to vassar but was rejected.
Deferred ED 1 at Hamilton College. School counselor called Skidmore and they said my daughter was defered because we need too much aid. Acceped into Ithaca College theater dept. With a HUGE scholarship. Any thoughts on Ithaca’s theater major?
So they are need aware and not need blind ?
Yes, that’s what they said.
They are VERY need aware and they are VERY up front about it.
As an applicant you don’t care if a school is need aware or need blind. You like the school and it’s perhaps a good match, so you apply. Aware/blind just affects the chance of admission, and then usually only if you’re on the bubble.
Of course it’s relevant to an applicant. If you are making ED1 and ED2 decisions and you need aid it’s a major difference if you apply to a need blind school vs a need aware. Because it could impact admissions you would not necessarily want to use the spot on a school that is only need aware if you need aid.
My bad; I assume students apply ED to their number one choice, and aren’t trying to game the system, re “use the spot.”
jnkan24, When we visited Skidmore a year and half ago, they were NOT very up front about being need aware. We were told in the info session they looked if an applicant needed financial aid if they were on the margins. We used this information and planed a second visit with an on campus interview. To our chagrin, my daughter was waitlisted with 1450 SAT, 4.25 w gpa and 8 ap’s, along with being a competitive dancer and other EC’s. Her stats were pretty close to the top 10% for admitted students, not exactly on the bubble.
vonlost, my daughter applied to her number two choice early decision, as the net price calculator was $10,000 less tha. t her number one choice, and she liked them about the same
We learned need aware is looked at very different at different school. Just trying to pass on what we learned.
We (collectively here) usually counsel against applying ED if the school is not by far the number one choice. It’s a long time from December to May, plenty of time to regret the decision (assuming accepted).
I was accepted to Skid with a full ride and my stats weren’t great. I didn’t send in my test scores either. But I know my common app essay was really good and I had an okay theatre and community resume. So I guess it all really depends.
vonliost, Everybody’s financial situation is not the same. To some, they would pay an extra $10,000 for their student to go to their number one choice, to others it is a huge factor. Also, couldn’t you regret picking what was your number one choice, then realizing it was not the right fit. If it were that easy no one would ever transfer.
40% of all students do not attend their number one choice for financial reasons.
Aware/Blind only affecting admissions for applicants just on the bubble is ignorant. Don’t mean to sound so blunt but if your giving advice on a public forum it should be correct.
There’s a difference between reasons that sound good, and good sound reasons. My advise comes from real life experience,
To clarify: my daughter’s waitlist to Skidmore was last year.
I think you missed the point. No one is using a spot or gaming a system. But if you are applying for a binding decision and you need aid you will do better at a need blind school. You wouldn’t want to risk not being able to afford to go and be bound. Which is why need aware is less attractive.
