I have a small dilemna and I need help finding any possibilites to solve it. I am a SOPHOMORE and I am taking Geometry (Honors). Its coming easy to me, very simple, etc. But as you know on this track, I wont be able to take Calculus AB when I get to senior.

At this rate, I will finish Geo this year, then I will take Algebra 2 Junior year, then pre-calculus senior year.

What can I do to make sure that I can take Calculus Senior year? I doubt taking both pre-calculus and calculus AB would make any sense, so should I skip it? Or algebra two? What other options are open?

Btw, I have not seen my GC but I dont want to ask him, I want to ask him when I already have ideas and suggestions, which I am hoping to get from some of you guys.

I would NOT skip Algebra 2. It is one of the most important classes in high school. You could try summer school, online classes, or community college classes. I would skip Pre-Calc.

I agree with what the posters above have said. Definitely take Algebra 2, then go on to Calc. Buy yourself a good precalc book and work through some of the material the summer in between, so you'll at least be familiar with the more basic calc concepts.

Have you considered summer program at a university? Have you ever looked into a summer math program such as Ross or PROMYS? Perhaps you would get more from an experience of that sort than a summer class at a high school.

Skip Algebra II or Pre-Cal. I dunno how it works at your school, but a lot of times, Algebra II is just a repeat of Algebra I, or Pre-Cal is a repeat of Algebra II. So find out which one would be better to skip at your school.

I would either skip precal, or take precal and Alg. II in the same year. However, these classes could be very different at your school than mine.

Perhaps you need to worry about getting higher level classes.......a more advanced curriculum. Where is your present HS? Does your math teacher have a PhD? Do any teachers of math at your school have PhDs?

Hazmat, I don't know why I'm think this, but for some reason that last post of your's sounding like an advertisement. For a minute, I thought you were going to suggest a specific program for the OP to attend.

Anyways, back to the OP:

If anything, I think that you should've skipped Alg. 1. It's so easy that you could have self-learned the major topics. But, you can't go back now. So, I advise that you take a class. If your school is similar to mine, they will want to see some evidence that you've mastered the material enough so you can skip a level. You may want to take a class or be tested on everything in Alg. 2 to show you can do it. Getting a good grade should allow you to skip a level.

hazmat, no, I am not planning on going to MIT nor am very very passionate about Math, but I am interested in a business major (along with politics) so I know that Calculus AB is a very good core course I should have before college.

Your programs do look interseting though. I am going to look into them.

--

Private joker, I am not sure how that would work, geometry so far is coming easy to me, I should be able to do well in that class... but I dont know alg2 so I wouldn't be sure how I can test it...

Private_Joker......you thought that informing a student asking a math question and giving him the link to AMC is advertising? I guess I am enough of an advocate for high funtioning kids to try and let them know that programs exist for rapid acceleration in academics....rather than being locked into low level math for the entire HS curriculum. Sorry you felt I was advertising. Most kids who take math class at the local college have exhausted the curriculum at their local school and believe it or not there exist HSs that don't administer the exams for advanced opportunities. Many programs exist as I am sure you are aware.

Take Algebra II in summer school. I took Geometry this passed summer because I wanted to take AP Calc as a senior, too. But Algebra II is definitely not something to skip, especially if you have Algebra II with Trigonometry.

I am not sure what my plans for this summer is so that is a bit in the air... I may be trying JSA but I am not sure either, and I may be going on vacation.

Besides skipping, is there any other ideas on how I can take it, but not during the summer?

You can take self paced math courses. So if you feel like working on your course one day, you can. Then if you don't feel like doing anything for a week, you won't be penalized.
