With a 5 on BC Calc, I know you can skip out of 1A. As an EECS major, is it common to take 1B freshman year, or is there a way to skip out of it? Taking the summer course is not an option for me.

SKIP OUT! Avoid the weeder class. Take 53 and 54.

I agree. Calso will tell you that you should take it, but the little extra things that they teach you aren’t really that useful. Math 1B also has the highest fail rate I hear :(. Just be sure you know your integration before taking 53

Is Calculus II at a community college the equivalent to Math 1B?

I thought a 5 on Calc BC gets you out of Math1B as well?

SKIP OUT. i didnt. big big mistake.
math 53 >>>> math 1b in every possible way

CASTEL i wish you had told me that before :(

Wait, but isn’t the information from 1B useful? Isn’t the hardwork worth it?

@flutterfly: when you say that "math 53 >>>> math 1b in every possible way " do you mean it’s harder or easier than 1b?

obviously more manageable. everybody else has confirmed it too

i just find it hard to believe lol, i thought math gets harder the more advanced you get.

and also, the people taking math53 onwards are probably the ones left from math1b that DIDN’T get weeded out, so i would think they’re all pretty smart…

yeah i meant easier

the material’s more advanced as in double/triple integrals/vector calculus but it’s not that difficult to understand. the tests are fairly straightforward too. as long as you know how to take derivatives and integrate (u-subs/by parts/trig subs…) you will be fine in 53.

math 1b was mostly repeating integrating methods and then doing the limits/power series/taylor mclaurin stuff thats pretty annoying/hard and unnecessary for 53. and the tests are designed to trick you and make you fail.

take 53, trust us.

very helpful info, thanks flutterfly
