Uh, this may seem random, but do people who are pre-med/MCB ever skip....

Chem 1A
Bio 1A, 1B
Math 1A, 1B

and take harder classes assuming... that they get all As and 5s in their high school APs. Those are weeder classes anyways right? The pre-reqs for med. school is typically 2 years of chem, 1 year of bio, 1 year of math (calc and sometimes stats). If I took calc C and D at a community college would it be okay if. I just took bio 1A/1AL and 1B for my 1 year of bio. chem 1AL, chem 3A/3AL, chem 3B/3BL, MCB C100A, MCB 100B for my 2 years of chem skipping chem 1A. Then i took a stats class and used community college credit for calc for math? I'm gonna fill out my schedule with other electives and upper division courses but would that be okay?

Basically to skip out of Chem 1A, Math 1A, and Math 1B.

A great many students who take Chem 1A got 4s and 5s in AP classes in high school, often including Chemistry, but the grade distribution means only a minority achieve an A, with some surprised by C or lower grades. If you think for a minute, you will see that the bulk of the student body were the high performers in high school, but with a bell curve for grades, you will be in an entirely different world at Cal.

Medical schools do not want you to skip out of the pre-req courses. While rare exceptions can happen, you put yourself at a major disadvantage for admissions if you do this. Check to be sure that the course sequence you propose would be considered the equivalent of 1 year inorganic and 1 year organic chem by the med school adcoms, because their requirement is not simply two years of chem. Often the med schools list the course equivalents they accept from Cal, if you dig around on their web site.

One other issue with your plan is that Chem 1AL is not a separate course for which you can register. Cal has a single course, Chem 1A, that includes the lab along with the lecture and discussions. Can’t get one without the other.

Your math plan would work, assuming you took more difficult advanced math classes for a year, but again make sure they would be acceptable to all the adcoms to which you might apply.

The premed courses are weeders and force out a chunk of formerly high performing HS students at each step. Taking harder versions of the weeders or more challenging courses could result in even lower grades. Unless you are SURE you are a superhero far above the rest of the students here at Cal, why not at least start your first semester with some traditional premed courses and see how you do?

Thanks a bunch, that actually helped. Haha, its not that I think im a superhero or anything I’m just trying to get a grasp of what people do. I guess I’ll try to skip ahead in math only then, thanks.

What other math classes would you guys recommend? I’m kinda of confused as to which math classes are offered and which ones you would recommend?

I basically see stats 2, and stats 20? Is stats only a 1 semester course and which one would be more appropriate? There’s also MATH 104 and MATH 110? What other math classes could I take, practically since I’m not going be to an engineer or a math major (premed?)?

STATISTICS 2 S 201 LAB
STATISTICS 2 P 002 LEC um what does the S and P stand for?

Mmm okay did a bit more research scratch MATH 104 and 110, how about the pre-reqs MATH 53, 54?

I would make one larger post, but it won’t let me edit after a certain period of time.
