I definitely recommend the APUSH course over regular US History for capable students--the typical regular HS course starts with the reconstruction era, while APUSH is from the beginning.
If you are looking for self-study options, consider any of a number of foreign languages in the Rosetta Stone computer program (about $300 for levels 1-2). My daughter did the French and German 1-2 programs in two summers and went straight to French and German IV with no difficulty in 9th grade, and she's working on the Spanish program now (unfortunately the only one other than English available in Level 3) and will take AP Language and Lit after she finishes. I'm a hs Spanish teacher teaching the average kid--there is no reason for more capable kids to waste so many years on it when they can easily do it on their own.
