Skipping a grade

Would skipping eighth grade be a plus or a minus in college admissions, assuming that I am in the top 1% of my junior class?

As the parent of an extremely bright child who is now a college junior, I have never been a fan of skipping. The stress of excelling as the curriculum becomes more difficult is made even more complicated by immaturity. I would encourage you to stay in your current grade and try to supplement your learning through reading, ECs, and summer academic programs.

Won’t you miss your friends. Don’t rush through high school, you are going to regret it.

No no no, I skipped eighth grade 3 years ago and am asking if colleges would view it as a plus or a minus. I did not actually have very many friends and find that I fit in very well with all of the friends I now have, but I do often regret it because I do not have a car and various other reasons. My principal actually pushed my parents to have me skip a grade, as I was a seventh grader who transferred from a private school to the public school. I was at the top of my class on top of taking the advanced math class when I did skip, and now, as a junior, I continue to excel.

I don’t know whether college admissions offices would consider it an advantage or a disadvantage. However, after helping my daughter through the college admissions process last year, I can tell you that there is no place on the common application that asks about this. Colleges will know that you are young for your grade only if they compare your birthdate to those of others who are applying or if you decide to bring up the subject.

I skipped kindergarten! hahaha I don’t think you should worry about what colleges will think at this point, what’s done is done

It’s not relevant to your application.

If you’re doing four years of high school it probably won’t be noticeable. One of my kids skipped in elementary school and it was never an issue in the college admissions process.

As others have said, no college will know if you skipped 8th grade if you put in 4 years of HS. However, if you feel it is relevant, you can include it in your essays as a "defining moment’ in your life if you wish to play it up. That is the only place where I think it would make any difference at all. I recommend using your essays for more recent and relevant experiences using a sentence or two to describe how skipping a grade was part of making you who you are today…
