Skipping Algebra 2

Freshman here, want to skip Algebra 2 to get into Honors Pre-Cal, is it hard to skip? Because some of my friends say its easy and that I should spare myself the boredom of the class and skip, others say that its really hard and a foundation for PRe-Cal so I shouldn't skip. What do you think?

I wouldn’t skip it, personally. Precalc and calc require solid advanced algebra skills.

Don’t skip it, if it’s even an option at your school. Take it over the summer if you want to advance.

Will your school allow you to skip it? What would you have to do?
If you don’t skip Algebra II, what will you take in your senior year? Will skipping Algebra II allow you to take a higher-level math class than you would have otherwise? If not there’s no point.

It’s really easy at my school and plenty of people have done it.

In order to do it, however, you’d need to take a finals, I’m pretty sure, and do well enough to show you know the subject. Then, you’d be put in Pre-Calc a year earlier, which would presumably get you into things like AP Calc, AP Stats and AP Physics much faster.

Um, so yes you can skip, by taking a course for Algebra 2, I have to take an online course or community college course for Intermediate algebra, ace the final, then take a test that will see if I’m ready, if I get 70% I go to Pre-Cal, if I get a 85% I go into Honors Pre-Cal. If I get in I want to take AP Cal AB, then AP Cal BC.

I don’t see the point of skipping Algebra II if you’re going to stop at BC either way. Rather than skipping Algebra II, it’s better to just take BC right after pre-calculus because BC should cover AB material.

Getting through BC earlier can also mean getting into AP Physics classes earlier

Look at prereqs for the AP Physics classes, especially C is you are interested. At my school Physics C can be taken concurrencly with Calculus.

Doing that is kind of like stabbing yourself to death. Holy #$@! is it painful.

I’d imagine it would be, good thing I don’t even have to think to take it, I’ll be taking Pre-Calc as a senior lol

Have fun in Pre-Calc; I’m doing it this year and my teacher somehow manages to treat my class like kindergarteners while also making sure we don’t understand the material.

There is such a disparity between honors & regular classes at my school. Despite me loving math more than any more, I was never able to go into honors math classes and it feels so much different from my other honors classes. It was all because I wasn’t “smart” enough in 7th grade to be selected to do Algebra in 8th grade, so I started Algebra freshman year…

Alg2 trig final will be super easy. We get to fill a single sided sheet with all the notes we want. And over what? This class is like 80% algebra 1 review.

Meanwhile, smart kids are struggling to get A’s in Honors Alg 2 Trig… I’d imagine it’d be a bad idea to skip Alg2 and go straight to Pre-Calculus, especially if you plan on AP Calc afterwards.

My best advice to 7th graders is to get into Algebra 1 kicking and screaming, since it is so critical for getting on other tracks later. This is because the whole thing isn’t decided on whether or not you can do it, but who can do it the best at the time. Thus, it doesn’t even take into consideration one’s work ethic and people are stuck in strange classes.

Have you thought about summer classes?

I was going to actually take Pre-Calculus at community college over the summer. But, I need another gym class from our school to graduate, which I am going to be taking in the summer, and I also have a job. There won’t be much time for me to take it…

If your on a bad math track it messes up all your other things because then your sciences are also mess up.

Stats, Algebra and Calc are really big on all of the science APs

Physics B is algebra based.

See above post

I really don’t recommend it. PreCal builds off of Algebra II and Algebra II has a TON of important concepts to learn and expands off of Algebra I. No one in my school is allowed to skip it or take it online. Please don’t do it.
