Hi
I’m an incoming college freshman. I took Calculus AB in high school, and it seemed very easy. I’m now consider skipping Calculus 2 and going straight to Calculus 3 (this could be done by taking a placement exam). I’ve worked through some of the Calc 2 curriculum and it doesn’t seem very hard, and I want a chance to get challenged in class. Do you think it’s ok to make that hop, or is it too much I would be missing?
What school are you at, and what AP score did you have?
If you will be trying to transfer to another school, what is your target school?
I got a 5, but I also got a 99 in the class and it was a bit boring. I’m going to Stony Brook.
Not sure why you posted in “UC Transfers”, but Stony Brook lets you out of Math 131 with a 5 on AB. Presumably, you also want to skip Math 132?
https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/ap/ap-calculus-ab-and-bc-course-and-exam-description.pdf has the AP calculus syllabus. The parts of BC that are not in AB are highlighted in blue (mostly series, but a few other topics here and there).
You may want to try the practice exams for Math 132 to see how well you know the material. https://www.math.stonybrook.edu/MAT132 .
Personally, I thought Calc II was one tough course!!! I would absolutely NOT suggest skipping it!!!
There are plenty of opportunities to be challenged. I think you may be opting for “confused” instead of “challenged.”
