I took my PSAT sophomore year, got dismal scores, 1830 overall, and forgot about it. I didn't prepare or anything like that. Now I'm really buckling down and giving a lot towards my SAT prep. I've signed up for the October 2009 test. Am I being dumb by not trying to get National Merit Finalist by re-taking my PSAT?

Taking the PSAT does give you experience taking the test under a timed situation.

In a word,…yes!

Why not try for national merit?

What you study for for SAT I applies to PSAT, and you save stress by not having an essay, so all you really lose is a couple of hours and some money.

You could take the SAT on October and then take the PSAT the week after that. Thats what I’m doing because of National Merit.

Oh wait, so you are allowed to take your PSAT after you’ve given your SAT? Do you have to sign up for the PSAT?

Yes, you are allowed to take the PSAT after you take the SAT. Yes, you have to sign up for the PSAT as well. Ususally, you sign up for the PSAT at your high school.
