I'm not sure if anyone on here will be able to answer this, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. I took the AP BC Calc exam last year, my junior year, and got a five on it, this year I'm taking linear algebra, and I've always felt I've had strong math skills. With that said, does it seem like a good idea to skip to Calc 3, MATH 0240? Has anyone had experience with this in the past?

Thanks,

Hi Porschedule,

I’m not sure if you’ve had this question answered, but your 5 on the Calc BC exam exempts you from Math 220 (Calc 1) AND Math 230 (Calc 2), so you definitely have the option of skipping. as to whether or not you should, that would be up to you. During your advising session at PittStart, you will have the chance to speak 1:1 with your advisor. This and other concerns should be brought up during that time.

Hope this helps, and HAIL to PITT!

I took Calc BC senior year of high school, got a 5, and thought I would never need to take math again. I changed to a chemistry major sophomore year, which requires Calc 3. Since I’m not very good at remembering what I learn in math, I took the AP credit for Calc 1, then took Calc 2 (essentially repeating the BC material). It was a tough class, but it refreshed my memory and got me back on track. Last semester, I took Calc 3. The Calc 3 material is generally looked at as somewhat easier than that for Calc 2. I would say if you are very comfortable with what you learned in AP Calc BC, then you should be fine to go straight into Calc 3. But like the poster above me said, you should definitely talk this over with your advisor.

This is very true. I got a 5 on my BC exam and went straight to Calc 3. I actually found it much easier than HS Calc (could’ve been the great teacher I had). Also 3 is basically Calc AB in 3 dimensions (you never really use topics from Calc 2/Calc BC again). Definitely don’t waste time re-taking Calc 2.
