So, i’m an international student who recently got an email from a liberal arts school in Indiana. The admissions officer want to have a skype interview with me. I’m a bit nervous, as this is my first time. Any advice?
Set up good lighting so you’re easily seen by your camera. Make sure you’re remote enough so outside, ambient noise doesn’t interfere. Good luck!
There are some questions that are fairly predictable, and vary only in wording from one college to another:
-What got you interested in (university)?
-What sort of activities have you done in the past?
-What’s an activity you see yourself doing at (university)?
-What do you like most about (university)?
-What do you like to do in your free time/to relax/for fun?
These are just a few, and I’m sure I’m missing a bunch, but having answers ready to these questions that aren’t the same ones everyone else will give (e.g. an NYU student talking about his/her love of NY City) will set you apart.
Don’t forget to ask them questions, too! Also, towards the very end of your conversation, ask if there is anything else they would like to know about you.
Make sure your computer is set up in a private, quiet area and that your are dressed appropriately (at least from the waist up!).
Read their website carefully so you can ask intelligent questions that show you have done your homework and learned about the college and its programs. Don’t ask questions that could be easily answered by looking at the website. Know why you are applying there. Also research the community and state where the college is located so you can say why you would like to spend four years in that place.
