Slacker in highschool wanting to get into better college

OK, so in highschool I was a real slacker and got a 2.8 GPA with 1580/2400 SAT... I still got into University of Tampa, and now that I am there, I for some reason started caring about life, my future and am doing better in classes. I think I will get around a 3.5 GPA this first semester and I can see myself getting at least keeping the 3.5 or even improving it providing I don't go back to my old habits. I was wondering whether if I keep my GPA up and maybe start joining some clubs or activities or something (so far I've only played intramurals here), I'd have a chance of transferring junior year into a school such as Boston Uni or University of Miami or maybe even NYU?

Also I am an international student (speak perfect fluent English... actually it's my first language), and money/financial aid/cost is not at all an issue. Errm... don't know whether or not this is relevant at all but I do some modeling, and I go to the gym regularly (well almost religiously ha), should I even mention this when I apply?

I'm looking into schools with good advertising/Public Relations programs and I'm more of a big city guy, but if anyone knows of any good advertising&PR schools not in a major city then I could check them out.

if you can keep your gpa up and write solid essays, you would have a chance. i suggest trying to transfer for junior year so that your high school grades don’t matter as much, or if you want to apply for 2nd semester of sophomore year, take summer classes to speed up earning credits. i believe nyu doesn’t weigh your HS heavily once you have 60 credits, so if you can get that far and still maintain a high gpa, you could potentially apply for spring '11. worst case scenario, apply for fall '11. it’s possible, you just need to work. check out the nyu threads and see what other people’s stats and stuff were.

Why do you think it’s better that I apply for spring 2011 than fall 2011?

From what I understand, you’re saying this looks like the best case scenario

 • Get good finals grades to keep up my GPA
 • Do good in Spring semester
 • Stay in college during summer and get extra (How many credits can I get during summer btw? Can I get as many as during a normal semester)
 • Hit the 60 credit mark during first semester of freshman year
 • All the while keeping a 3.5+GPA
 • Go to better college for second semester of sophomore year

Also, do you think it’s better I write apply to each college separately or just use the common app?

Normally, you should try Spring transfer for Sophomore year. If you really want to attend the Private universities, you don’t want to miss out the campus activities and establishment of social group that’s going on right now.

Just take Summer classes and reach for As. :)

in your case, and in general, the higher the GPA the better. shoot for 3.7+

right, my point was that you would have more time at your new school if you could have enough units to get in for spring instead of fall. you may have to use the commonapp whether or not you like it, but if you really want to send different versions, just send it via snail mail. just make sure you send it out way before the deadline and it should be fine.

Yeah pretty much as reillytheman said reach for a 3.7+ since it would make you pretty much shine. Shows that you also started to do well in school when they glance at your high school transcript.

Thanks guys, I’ll go for a 4.0. But I’m pretty sure I’ll fall short of that 4.0 :(.

Anyways, time to realize my potential and get to business.

You’ll get into Miami if you keep your grades at a 3.5 GPA. BU too.

NYU is harder but if you present yourself in a good light, you have a shot. GOOD LUCK
