slash question

I am writing my short answer for the common app and I want to use --, which forms into a long -.

It doesn't seem to work. should is just leave it as -- or just write - (shorter one)?

ex.
soccer is so fun -- so fun that i devote my entire year to it.

or

soccer is so fun - so fun that i devote my entire year to it.

I came across the same thing and ended up putting two dashes instead of one, I think. I doubt it matters. When I print previewed it, the two dashes were so close together that they almost looked like one.
