Sleep Deprivation

I actually don’t function w/ >6 hrs of sleep lol. I’m like a zombie if I get less…

I’m a sophomore and I take 5 Honors classes plus an elective. In the winter I am going to be doing Indoor Track and competitive ski-racing. I will get home at 4:45 every week day, and then skiing is every weekend day from 8 am to 2:30 pm. I also like to have extra time to draw because my goal is to go to an arts school some day. I already get an average of 5 hours of sleep and I don’t think I’ll be able to maintain even that during winter. I am a huge coffee drinker however lol.

I’m a sophomore but I only take one AP… at my school as sophomores we can only take APUSH, AP Bio or both. The kids who take both plus a sport get very little sleep. I get 8 hours a night, but I still live on caffeine haha. Try working in the morning, I do that occasionally. I also try to make the most of my time. Any off time I may have (transport time, free time during class) I try to get as much work as possible done. Never underestimate the power of your smartphone if you have one too. If I have to type something up, I speak into the mic and have the phone type it for me. I’m constantly on the google docs app, or my notes section doing work. I also take pictures of any study material so I can look at it on the go…Quizlet is a GODSEND… it’s all about time management!

Oh, goodness…I usually get 5 hours of sleep at night and 6 at the max. That’s why I’m SO excited for Christmas Break because I can finally sleep in and enjoy the cozy comfort of my bed! I’m currently a junior and am taking AP Bio, AP Lang. and Comp., AP Chem, and AP Calculus. School isn’t just 7 hours for me…it’s more of like 17 hours for me since I have to study/do homework right after school to get everything done and caught up. Sleep deprivation is such a serious problem. >< I try and take 10-15 minute naps in between my studies that way I can generate some more brain power, and I find that that helps sometimes.

Hmm well one solution would be to take less rigorous classes (if you’ve already optimized everything else)? I know it’s pretty darn competitive out there, but I don’t think it’s worth sacrificing your health and well being for one extra AP.

Right now, I’m taking AP Gov, AP French, semester LA, and health/gym in the morning and AP sleeping, AP sleeping, AP sleeping during lab aid, AP sleeping during independent study in the afternoon (seriously, AP sleeping would be a great class). I can usually finish my Gov homework in 5-10 minutes (unless it’s the day before a test - 1-2 hours of reading), French homework in 5-10 minutes, and LA homework in 30-ish minutes (unless the teacher assigns a random 8 page typed essay… for a non-AP class omfg). Sports take 3-5 hours a day and extracurriculars I usually put off a bit during swim season. So, I’m usually able to finish my homework in one of the AP sleeping periods, get 2-ish hours of sleep in school, and be back home by 6-ish.

I don’t really get much sleep though… like 6 hours of anime a day and 3 hours of games a day xD unhealthy. Make sure to cut that stuff first if you’re lacking sleep. Pretty chill life.

Another thing - as much as I hate paying attention in class, diligently doing classwork and listening to what the teacher says goes a long way to making homework, studying, etc. much much easier and quicker.

I have gotten about 6 hours of sleep in the past 3 days. I am so glad winter break is here.

Break is going to be sleep and more sleep.

I take 5 APs, average sleeping from 11:00 - 5:30. Yeah, break is gonna be awesome!

4 hours of sleep is normal now…can’t wait to get more than 8 every day and not gulp coffee down in the morning.

I recommend soda, coffee, and tea.

However, maybe also consider ways to cut corners on your work? I don’t mean cheating, but just doing the absolute bare minimum every now and then, especially if it’s just busy work. Ultimately, even if you’re thinking about teacher recommendations, the strength of the recommendations probably comes down to your personality, class participation, and how well you do on significant assignments and exams. I don’t think a lackluster grade once every five problem sets makes much of a difference.

I used to pull all-nighters like crazy in high school, and I didn’t generally sleep more than 6 hours ever. I always thought that it was completely necessary. But in retrospect, it wasn’t, and there were far more valuable things that could have been done with that time than actually doing all of the several hundred pages of reading, etc.

I get a good 7 to 8 hours every night and I take 4 ap classes. That probably has to do with the fact that I a) don’t read textbooks (mostly because I only have one class that requires it that I don’t care about - ap psych) b) my regular classes are very easy (debate and econ/soon to be aerobics) and c) my school gives seniors the option to opt out of either first or seventh period. I don’t go to school until 8:30 am. :P

Meh, my school gives options to juniors and seniors an opt out period. We go to school every day at 8:15, but on some days when we don’t have double periods in the morning, we start at 9:00, or if you’re a junior, once a week class doesn’t start until 10:45.

I recommend sitting down every night and deciding what is important. If I have a physics test the next day, the FIRST thing on my to-do list is studying for that test, because my school weights tests so much more heavily than classwork/quizzes. The next priority is anything that is graded (some teachers actually check my homework, others don’t). This includes reading over anything I know I’ll have a quiz on. After that, if it’s super late I just go to bed. If it isn’t, I do whatever I know I need extra practice on. Anything I understand I never waste time on, unless I just have a really light workload one night. Basically, decide what is the most important to you (for me it’s keeping my gpa up) and work based on those priorities.

Hey everyone, just popping in, hope you don’t mind I’m a college student so I know a thing or two about not getting enough sleep!

The biggest piece of advice I have for you is prioritize and organize. Keep a planner and schedule as much as you can into your day before (x time) for me, I need a solid 6 hours of sleep and I’m ok. Its also important to keep am eye on your eating habits, pick natural energizing foods (such as fruits, apples are esp good) over the teas and coffees right away. Schedule break time into whatever you’re doing. With high school it’s a little more difficult because everything has to be done for the next day but if you can time yourself out you should be ok!

Anybody else live with 3-5 hours here?

With procrastination, half-assed assignments, I can get a healthy 8-9 hours a day. Basically I cruise through lectures and everything else until the tests. The day before exams and assignment checks are hectic though. However, I often choose to go to bed at 12-1 so realistically I still get 5-6 hours a day…

Well I’m sleeping 12 hours, it’s just 3-3 not 10-10.

@Yakisoba I know this thread is way old and basically dead, but reading that seriously encouraged me to go to bed now.
