My parents want me to attend one of the events saying that it will increase my chance at being admitted, but I don't have the time to do so as it's a long drive away from where I live. I'm applying ED, and was wondering if it actually will increase my chances. Reading the description of the event, it doesn't really seem likely.

CMU gives weight to demonstrated interest, and investing the time/money in a sleeping bag weekend does help to demonstrate interest.

That said, if you’re not interested in attending CMU please don’t attend one of the weekends. It blows to be a host to a bagger that’s not interested. You’re donating your free time to this student, and it’s miserable when they don’t even want to be there.

I’m definitely interested in CMU as I’m applying ED, and thanks for the information. Hard to decide if I will go or not though :|

If you’re interested enough to apply ED then you ought to be interested enough to spend a night or two there to make sure you want to make that sort of binding agreement, honestly.

BTW, that wasn’t meant to sound snarky or harsh or anything. By going ED you’re agreeing that if CMU accepts you, you’ll attend for sure. That’s likely to be four years of your life, and the only time you’re going to spend as an undergraduate student. I’d want to be as sure as possible it’s the place I wanted to spend that much time, and a weekend chilling out with some current students doesn’t sound like too much to ask.

RacinReaver,
ouo206 said he/she is applying ED…so I would say they are serious. maybe they just feel uncomfortable sleeping on a strangers floor in a dorm. I do think he/she needs to visit at the very least even if they do not do the sleep over.
I get what you are saying, but perhaps a visit over several days while staying at the Fairmont Pittsburgh Hotel.
