Anybody else going to the Nov. 9/10 sleeping bag weekend?

I may be going, I'm trying to register late but I'm not sure if they'll have me. Should be an interesting experience, all things considered-- I hear Pittsburgh is cold as hell right now!

Well, cold coming from a southern california perspective.

My daughter is going to be visiting the campus on Sunday and Monday during Sleeping Bag Weekend. But it was full and we could not register. She would love to link up with the group even though she will be staying off campus. Can anyone share a schedule of activities or any other info? Please feel free to PM me. Thanks in advance.

i am going

Argh, I couldn't register either, Helpermom. There's another one in January, isn't there? I guess I'll be at that one.

My son didn't go to the sleeping bag weekends, but did go for the Accepted students weekend. He was too late signing up for the sleeping bag part so I got us a hotel room, but it turned out they found rooms for everyone who showed up. It was a bit of a zoo as they rustle up extra rooms, but they did find them. So if worst comes to worst plan on visiting then. :)

I look forward to meeting any of you who will be out there. I live in Arizona, and it was mid 80's to 90 degrees as recent as a week ago, so it should be interesting with the climate change. Oh, and do any of you know if the on-campus interviews that we can schedule are evaluative or not? If I plan to schedule one, do I need to pack some formal clothing into my luggage?

bco- interviews aren't evaluative. i wore a dress and the interviewer was seriously impressed though, and said that most kids show up in jeans. something to consider.

honestly, the sleeping bag weekend's arent incredibly helpful, just because they don't allow for a lot of student interaction- most of the activities just put you in groups with other baggers. i think it's more beneficial to ask to stay with someone for a few days if you know any current students.

One of my good friends in undergrad was placed in a fraternity for sleeping bag weekend. I think it was the only time he ever set foot in a frathouse all four years he was at CMU.

Also, please, if you're a bagger, please be interesting. I hosted a few times and some of the students I got were soooooooooooooooooo dull. I mean, I'm taking time out of my day/night to show you around campus, let you do stuff and all of that. The least you can do is be interesting enough to hold conversation for longer than five minutes.

Edit: Oh yeah, for anyone flying in for this. Take the 28X bus from the airport. CMU is the last stop on the bus, and it's only around $2 for fare instead of the ~$50 you'd pay for a taxi.

Heh, funny that this thread should come alive 2 weeks after the weekend, but good input nonetheless. I had a lot of fun during the weekend. Sitting on classes/listening to presentations was ok, but the interview i had is probably the most useful thing to come out of the trip (assuming it helps me to get accepted). My host and I got along pretty well too, so that was nice. He was gone Monday morning before I woke up, so i was basically just wandering from class to class... not really a big deal though.

And yeah, 28x was great. Empty on the way there, standing room only on the way back to the airport... I wonder how long CMU can sustain that kind of population loss :P

apparently they might get rid of the bus services because not many people are using buses here. also, the sleeping bag weekend coordinators are frustrated cuz some people cancel at the last minute so there are hosts who don't have a bagger while there were other people who couldn't even sign up. like my baggers canceled the first two times. =/ people should just check their emails before the weekend so they can confirm that they're either going or not going to the SBW.

Ever since I started at CMU in 2003 the city has been threatening to cancel the 28X due to "lack of use." Each time at the last time the bus line is saved. It's also been the most consistently full line I've ridden on. I think if they are planning on eliminating it they'd first cut back the frequency of runs from every 15 minutes to ever 30 minutes.

Frankly, I think the taxi companies are just trying to pay off the local politicians so you'd have to shell out $50 each way to/from the airport.

that's interesting that you say that AtoChansu because I actually had to double up with another bagger to share a single host during my visit

doubling up is due to the host noting that they could accommodate a certain number of students.

first year in donner we had a three people living in a double (due to not enough student housing), and we wrote that we could host three more...

they gave us two once, but thats about it. One goes here now, we still chill.

Also, bring pot, thats a good way to make friends.
