Slideroom - for music supplement - a couple of questions

I am a techno-challenged mom. What is Slideroom? Will music supplements be in audio or video files? Or does the college choose the format? Meaning, will some want audio and some want video???

Somewhere(???) I read that music supplements cannot be submitted until the Common App is complete - does this include teacher and counselor recs, school profiles, etc.? Or does this just mean when the student's portion is complete.

Slideroom is merely an “upload zone” for applicants to drop off various files for the application. File upload formats include BOTH audio and video. Colleges should specify the format (either in the Slideroom interface or on their own websites). Arts supplements are being done in a different way from previous years where students wrote a generic “common Arts Supplement” and sent this to each college. Now on the new Common App, each school must create their own “Slideroom” for arts supplements. On the supplements tab for each school, clicking the box or selecting the option for arts supplement should link to that school’s Slideroom features. If you’re looking to give it a spin, you can have your (future) applicant add WashU to to their “My Colleges” list to take a look a Slideroom from an applicant’s perspective.

Hope I helped!

Yes, of course you helped!

So, I read on Brown’s application site the following:

“Slideroom only accepts one submission, if submitting two you will need to sign up with a second e-mail account.”

Does that mean two types of submissions - either art OR music OR photography, etc.?
It doesn’t mean all of one’s music has to be uploaded in one big “chunk” (see how tech savvy I am - lol!) does it??

I believe SlideRoom has a built-in maximum of 25 files. I think what Brown means is that if you have more than 25 files (Wow! if you do) you’d have to register another e-mail to access a second SlideRoom submission.

And just a note on that last bit about “chunks”, the answer is no. With a opportunity to submit 25 different files you needn’t cram many songs/performances into just one recording/file. Though I suppose in a way the 25 files together make up one big “chunk” that is sent to the university.

Thanks, jma4130!!

I appreciate your help and explaining things in terms that this dumb ol’ mom can understand! :)

Any idea about my question about timing of submission? I am stressed enough as it is, but if we can’t submit until the entire Common App is complete (including the portions we have no control over - teacher recs, etc.) that is another level of stress. If they don’t do their part until the 11th hour and then we are trying to do the music supplement at the 11th hour…

I really need to spend less time on this site! Ha ha.

For the Arts Supplement:
Well, you can access Slideroom at any time i.e. get uploading files as soon as your colleges’ supplements go live.

For the whole shebang:
While it is true that the final* app with all the fixings (arts supplements, school-specific writing supplements) can only be submitted when all of its components have been completed, keep in mind that it will be the responsibility of your applicant at home to sufficiently bother their teachers/recommenders early enough to maintain some comfort (if teacher’s are being difficult, you may want to turn to others).

Thanks, again. I don’t think ds’s recommenders will procrastinate. But, it’s good to know that, yes, EVERYTHING has to be in before he can submit his music supplement.

SlideRoom is individualized for each college. I just opened up Stanford’s Arts Sup. and they are instituting the historic 10 minute limit. They have 6 files rather than WashU’s 25. In general some schools will be much more restrictive.
