Slightly confused about Brown's supplement 2013-2014..?

Hi all! So, according to my CommonApp account, Brown’s writing supplement is posted. Yet the website for Brown doesn’t have an updated writing supplement for the 2013-2014 school year. So is Brown’s supplement for 2013-2014 actually updated and ready for me to start on it? Or not? I hear that the supplement usually doesn’t come out until late August; that’s the only reason I’m skeptical. Thanks so much!

Em, actually Brown complete everything :), You can find writing supplement right now!

The questions on the common app website are noticeably different than the ones listed in [the PDF from last year on Brown’s website](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)-- the longer ones have either been shortened or cut, and some questions have been reworded & added. In all, the one on the common app site seems much easier. Are you sure the one’s on the common app site are the correct ones?

There also seem to be no PLME/RISD/Physical Sciences Questions anymore. Does anyone know if those will still be required. At least for the dual degree programs, those questions seem pretty important

@Ar4ybaldik: Ok thanks! Do you find it weird that this year’s supplement is so much shorter than last year’s? (I’m personally kinda disappointed about this, because the 2012-2013 questions allowed you to demonstrate your true personality a bit more…but what can we do…)

@boy129349: “Are you sure the one’s on the common app site are the correct ones?”
Good question, honestly I’m not quite sure…that’s part of the reason I’m so confused about all this! Is it possible that the questions on the Common App are incomplete or something? (But I guess that’s not possible…or else the site would say “Writing Supplement Not Yet Available”) I’m really excited to get started on these, which is why I made this thread in the first place; I just wanna make sure everything is in order before I start :)

@tommy22: Yeah I realized that too, which is another reason why I’m skeptical about the questions on the Common App. I’m not applying PLME/RISD/Physical Sciences though, but still I think those questions should be included… I just don’t know…

Why don’t you just take what is there, cut and paste into a word document, and work on it off line for a few days as a rough draft. No need to rush, you’ll want proof reading etc. No advantage to submitting on “day zero”.

@BrownAlumParent: Oh yeah that’s a great idea, thanks for the tip  And don’t worry, I wasn’t going to submit ANYTHING yet…I really want to perfect my supplement before I send it in. Plus, there isn’t any advantage to sending it extra early, is there?? Do adcoms start looking at apps the moment they come in, even if they come well-before the ED due date? Just curious…

I would guess there might be a tiny advantage to submitting in the “first third” of time/ numbers, before adcoms get jaded. And submitting on the last 3-4 hours of the deadline is not a great idea. (although I have known students admitted who did just that.) For PLME, RISD dual, students who have art/ music supplements etc. or anything that extends the time for admission to process, then getting everything in at least 4- 6 weeks before the deadline might be advantageous. (Unproven, just makes sense.) And yes, most adcoms start reading “folders” as soon as they come in (once they are at least mostly complete. So getting them in way before HS recs etc is not likely to get it read earlier. )

Just saying, I turned in my app no more than a day before the ED deadline (with PLME app as well as a music supplement), and I got in. I wouldn’t worry yourself about bias that way.

Why are the two PLME essay questions not there? I worked so hard on them and now the questions aren’t there anymore.

@BrownAlumParent: Okay, thanks again for the tip! Between yours and bruno14’s comments, I figure that I’ll probably make a bit of a compromise and make sure my app is in no later than 3 weeks before the Nov 1st due date.

@bruno14: Hey, thanks for that. It actually helps ease off the stress of having to get in my app super-early, but I’m still pretty sure that I won’t wait that long to send it in :). And congrats for getting in to Brown! hehe

@RhythmMeleon: Oh nooo! :frowning: Did the Common App erase your ANSWERS, too?? Or did you save them in a separate word document?? Maybe there’s some administrator for the Common App website who can help you, if you email them…idk what to tell you, like I said I’m not applying PLME, so I haven’t had the same problem. At least, not yet. crosses fingers in hope that this doesn’t happen

What happened to the question for the specific school you are applying to (where you need to upload the file). I did it, and I checked back. Now the question itself is not there anymore. Did they remove it? I’m confused!

It looks like the regional adcoms are on the road marketing until at least mid october. Do you think they would review applications while traveling? It doesn’t seem practical to me.

Are they still reviewing paper files or has the review process shifted to being all on screen?

Is there still a lag time because an office assistant needs to compile a paper file for each applicant prior to review?

Have any of you been able to figure out what happened to Brown’s supplement? The PLME prompts are gone :(

The prompts were just added back again. Same as last year with 500 word limt

The one where you upload the pdf is still not there. It kind of sucks because I spent a couple of hours on it and now I can’t submit it.
