SLO vs. CSUPomona Engineering

So it's pretty apparent from what I have read and seen, that SLO has a better engineering program than CSU Pomona (Cal Poly Ponoma for short). Just in case I don't make it into SLO, I am applying to CSU Pomona. They both have very good engineering programs, but what will I be missing if I go to Pomona over SLO if I get denied at SLO?

Pomona sucks. I got to CP SLO right now, I’m a freshman. They have, I believe, the second best engineering program in the nation. Pomona is wayyyy smaller, and I definitely DO NOT recommend going there. I am transferring out of Poly, but I’m very sure you will absolutely LOVE it. It’s a great school. Message me back if you need to know anything else about Poly. Good luck future Mustang!

Your credibility went down the toilet right there.

How did my credibility go down the toilet? I’m not an engineering student, that is just what I was told…

Okay. I am cutting it close. The admissions adviser told me that the best thing to do to increase my acceptance is to get my ACT and SAT scores higher. I got a 27 on ACT (took it last year) and a 1620 on SAT (1090 in math and CR) So I am definitely working on it. I mean, I am a lot smarter than what my GPA says (I have a 3.71 GPA). What about Fresno state? I live in Fresno so I have been told its a decent engineering school, but I hate this place. Anyway…

Also, apply for Early Decision. It will GREATLY improve your chances. See, the standards for early decision are higher, but since not many people apply for early decision, they are able to take a greater number of applicants based on percentages. Plus, if you don’t get in, then you will automatically be considered for regular decision. Do you have any other questions? I’ve lived 20 minutes away from SLO my whole life, so I’m kind of an expert on the school and the area. :)

So if I do apply for early admission, I have a higher chance of getting accepted? Do you have sources for that? I will apply for early decision then, but what if I need to change my SAT and ACT scores? They are definitely not engineering quality in my opinion.

I don’t have sources, I just know from personal experience. I was accepted as Early Decision last year. They accept a lower percentage of students as early decision due to the higher standards, but since there are fewer applicants, you are more likely to get accepted. That is what I was told and what I have experienced. You’re right, your markings aren’t quite up to par, but focus on making a significant improvement. I increased my score by 100 points from the first time to the second, my second score being 1800. I also had a 3.88 GPA and TONS of extra curriculars. Focus on getting your markings just a bit higher and you should be fine. Also, if you took any college courses during high school (actual college classes, not just AP/Honors), that looks great too. I myself took 4 and I think that helped me to get in. Each time you take the SAT/ACT make sure to have them sent to the university.

Scozzar, what high school in Fresno?

Sure, if you believe in rankings, SLO has many credits on US news, but Pomona does ok. Anyway, what is the point of focusing on what you will miss out on if you don’t get in?

The SLO and Pomona campuses’ student populations are very close to each other.

While the populations are close, Pomona is less well-known, does not carry as much weight, is in a much smaller city, is less desirable, is ranked lower in sports, has a smaller freshman class, etc. Saying a school is small is not limited to population.

Ranks highly among best CSU campuses.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/california-colleges/928170-most-beautiful-cal-state-campus-3.html?highlight=most+beautiful+csu

What does “not carry as much weight” mean? I would LOVE to not carry as much weight!

A degree from there would not carry as much weight as a degree from CP SLO. It wouldn’t be as appealing to potential employers or grad schools.

Mkay I think I might just apply for early decision then if it;ll help me. What’s there to lose?

My stats are in the thread below if anyone wants to see them

Don’t forget ED for SLO is binding!

Uhh, LOL. Case in point; you have no credibility.

The best US public undergraduate engineering school (without Phd) is West Point, US Military Academy. Behind West Point is Cal Poly.

So that is where she got the number 2. She is not wrong, just not complete in her information provided.

Her “facts” are a jumble, inaccurate and really are neither germaine nor helpful to the OP.

Early Decision closed October 31st…
you can only apply normal decision now…

and SLO is WAY better than Pomona
Pomona is still a good school though.
