My nephew loves college but is stressed bc he is a slow reader. He’s doing great in his math/science classes but struggling in his two humanities classes. He does nothing but work on schoolwork because he’s so worried he is going to fall behind. I’ve suggested he go to the counseling center for help with the anxiety but am wondering what kind of effective help there is for slow readers. I ordered him a book “10 Days to Faster Reading” and looked into the Temple U Reading Program for adults but it’s not until next summer.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any online programs that can help?
Books on tape maybe. Even textbooks are available recorded for dyslexics. My spouse is a math science guy and very slow reader. There is a lot of info out there about stealth dyslexics and Twice exceptional people. Might be worth a read. My younger D has stealth dyslexia. She reads way above grade level but slowly and methodically. When she is tired I will read her school text books to her. Maybe your nephew could hire someone local to read to him. Its not uncommon.
Vision exam.
Reading disability evaluation plus acommodations as warranted.
Text to speech program.
Yes definitely eye exam. I forgot about Convergence Insufficiency. Another item to research.
I didn’t even think of an eye exam- thanks! Currently he is on a waiting list to be tested for a reading disability (he can’t afford to pay for the testing so a grad student is going to do it under the supervision of a doctor) and until the testing is done he gets accommodations but I think that will only help him for in-class essays. He still has to read the same amount outside of class.
My son is dyslexic but never got services because “his grades were too high”. Don’t get me started. What really helped him was the summer reading program. Ours was through Baylor but was given by the Institute of Reading Development. He did it the summer before his Sr. year and went from a slow reluctant reader to an avid reader who is much quicker than he used to be. Hid ACT reading score went up 5 points after the class too! I was sold on it for him. Another friend took it and also found it very helpful. We didn’t find anything online that was nearly as helpful. Is there a reading lab at his college?
@momocarly I’m not sure/ I will look into it- he goes to a pretty small LAC so I’m not sure what’s available
I agree with @aroundhere. Sounds like a processing issue. Only comprehensive neurospsych testing will give a definitive answer.
Definitely get evaluated for a reading disorder.
Then get accomodations.
Also he will have to get started earlier on reading for classes.
I know I’m late to the game with this, but he should get a learning ally subscription and an iPad with learning ally link. It will read to him, but highlight the text as he reads. Then in the app, you can annotate and bookmark. It’s amazing for dyslexia and fluency issues!!! Bookshare works too, but my child likes the real voices and the functionality of the program.
