slow start, USC and Michigan

Long story short, freshman and sophomore years i got mostly Bs because i was focused on basketball, but now my junior year is happening and i'm completely focused on school and get into a good college and doing whatever it takes. I've taken all honors classes and APs and just took the SAT, and will take it again, and possibly the ACT. I live in california and come from a decently wealthy family with a brother at NYU. Here's the lay-down: Freshman year i took all honors classes and finished with a 3.2 and sophomore year i also took all honors and finished with a 3.2. Junior year, when i decided to try my hardest with grades and such for college: 1st/2nd semester:
AP Eng Lang A, A
AP Environmental Science A, A
AP U.S History A, A
Pre Calc Honors A, A
I still play varsity basketball as well. Over the summer i will also be taking classes at a local city college that look good and count for college credit. I have already taken Art history and got a B. I will also take online AP spanish, Introduction to business, and possibly Poly Sci and hope to get As in these as well.
Extra Curriculars: Im in the school green club which includes beach clean ups and such. Ive been in a non profit organization since it started before i was in High School and am now a leader as of last year and this year as well as next year. The organization helps less fortunate kids get sports equipment they cannot afford. We speak at schools, collect used equipment, cooperate with companies like Sports Authority and Big 5 for business. This organization gets a lot of publicity in the area as well. I will have played basketball all 4 years which is everyday.I have also been a counselor for a community basketball camps for kids that happened once a week for 2 months and 1 week straight during the summer. This summer, i will be taking a 1 month USC Business class that looks very good and is also quite expensive. Im apart of the National Honors Society since it was available to me. Test Scores: I plan on getting a 2000+ SAT score and if i try the act, a 32 +-. Senior Year: AP Eng Lit, AP Econ/gov, AP calc, AP physics, and possibly another AP if needed. My question is with my so-so freshman and sophomore years, will i be able to be accepted into my top choices like USC, Umich, SMU, NYU, UT, Ucla(unlikely)? I;ve worked extremely hard to get all As and take as many Aps and challenging courses as a possibly can throughout my education, i've worked hard for test scores, and i have leadership and participation in extra curriculars, and will participate in a selective USC business class. I plan on good recommendation letters as well as solid essays. If i continue this path for all As, test scores, classes, etc, do i have a shot at those schools? (USC and Umich are top 2). Im constantly stressing about it and all i need is a shot and i think i could possibly get the acceptance letter around a year from now. What do you guys think?

USC is just as unlikely as UCLA… but what exactly is UT, Tennessee, Texas-Austin or Toronto?

USC: Reach
UMI: Reach (Ross or not)
UCLA: Reach
UTN: Aim for 24+/1700+
UT-Austin: Reach
U Toronto: Aim for 28+/1950+ (Rotman is a reach)
NYU: Aim for 32+/2150+
SMU: Aim for 28+/1950+

Well for most of those schools your GPA is a little below average so try as hard as you can on your tests to get a 2100+/32+ and that may help your chances despite your GPA. If you have great leadership positions and are in clubs that interest you, then you can totally make up for a poor GPA in some cases

My thread (chance please): <a href=“Chances for Vanderbilt, UNC, NYU, UF, and Duke? - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1610985-chances-for-vanderbilt-unc-nyu-uf-and-duke-p1.html</a> .

Use basketball to your advantage. Explain, in your essay, why you focused on basketball so much. Make it personal. Otherwise, keep trying harder. Your list of colleges is pretty well thought out. You may want a few more safeties, though. Good luck!

@catria, thanks but considering my rigor of classes and upward trend to all As junior year and when applying i will have around a 3.6 gpa, attending a USC month long business class, along with other great extra curriculars relating to business, and the fact plenty of people have gotten in with similar situations, couldn’t USC still be a more realistic option? Ive displayed my interest in going there and could eventually have an interview, and i can pay the full tuition, i believe a USC acceptance could happen.

Well you know that UC’s won’t count your freshman grades. Expand your list of UC’s so you have great options and instate price instead of making your parents pay OOS at Michigan or UT where it will be hard to get in, I’m guessing.

I don’t know why you are taking AP Spanish online? That’s an important class and I think it benefits to do in person.

CC dual enrollment type classes are great to show that you are pushing yourself, but intro to business is pretty lightweight and useless,. I’d skip it and take Statistics or something more useful. Make sure you keep the grades up for summer and 1st semester Sr. year for maximum benefit.

You will get a better idea when you get test scores.

Just take the USC class if it is affordable it demonstrates your interests. It doesn’t matter that it is expensive. You said it is selective, so what is the admit rate? or is it just selective in term of you just get to do it if you can afford it?

Keep up the good work.

At 3.5 USC still asks for 32+/2150+…

Thanks @brownparent, the summer class is epensive and it was an application process with transcripts and essays and reccomendations. The only reason i would take intro to business is because it would demonstrate my interest to expand in that particular field. I have a brother who got into NYU with rather lows stats(3.4 1900 sat) and we are able to pay the full tuition so tuition at any of the schools isnt a huge problem.
