SLU med program

Hi, I received notice that I got into the Saint Louis University Medical Scholars Program. Does anyone know how this program rates? I also applied to the Miami 7-year, GWU 7-Year, Vanderbilt ENGAGE Program, and the Miami Ohio/UCCOM program. I am also going to apply to the University of Missouri-Columbia med program.

its fairly decent...check out the website at http://www.slu.edu/colleges/AS/phs/medScholars.html

rehan, did you apply EA to SLU?

also, does anyone have SLU's medical school ranking?

Thats a 6-year program?

According to the website, you still have to take the MCAT (although there's no high score you should get - it says "just try your best on the MCAT."

It appears to be an 8 year program, but basically, it's guaranteeing acceptance to SLU, unless of course, you don't meet the GPA standards or commit some crime, etc.

it's, at worst, a great backup b/c admissions is nowhere near as difficult as other programs.

Mediterranean, i didnt apply EA. They are on rolling admissions but I applied by November 1st anyway. They are on the commonapp with no supplement so it was simple to apply. I figured it would be a good backup to some of the other more competetive programs. I would be satisfied to go there from what i know of it.

can you still apply to SLUs bs/md program?

If you can, what do you need to send them, and is there a supplement that you need to send them with your regular college app?

Does SLU have a good reputation in the medical community though?...I'm asking cuz I'm still debating whether it's worth it or not, because there's also other good colleges where I can get into the med school easily from their undergrad school.

SLU is not bad, top 50 maybe?....definitely very easy to get into the medical scholar's program, so go for it.

That's not a bad program then. I'm pretty sure I'll get rejected by Brown PLME and Boston University, so I'm aiming for Drexel, VCU, and maybe Miami next year. Miami will be a nice place to get accepted into, since it's close to the beach and they just received a $100 million gift from an elderly couple.

My GPA will probably be between 3.8 and 3.9, with the SAT score being in the 1500s. Do you think I shouldn't go to SLU and go to pre-med and then attempt to get into a better program?

And if you think that SLU is a better choice than doing pre-med and getting into say, Harvard or Yale Med School, please give a few reasons why...cuz I'm trying to convice my parents to do so, and need a few ideas to convince them!

WHOA, i never heard of this program; do you apply to this program as a senior? has the deadline date past?!? is this instate only!? shoot, at least it will be good for my cousin next year heh....

rishug87, it's not the typical BA/MD program; in fact, they don't even guarantee you a seat at SLU Medical School technically (at least that's what I'm inferring from their website, if I'm wrong, someone please correct me). you'll still need to take the MCAT with this program and again, i've got to emphasize, that it's not the typical BA/MD program.

you have to interview at the end of sophomore year to be accepted into the med school. You need to maintain a 3.5 GPA and take the MCAT (but there is no required score). As for the deadline, there is none bc the school is on rolling admissions. However, it may be more difficult to get in at this time of year, becauase spots have been filled up. My twin brother applied a month after than me, and he wont hear back until Feb, whereas I have known that I am in since mid December.

rehan, you seem to be knowledgeable about the program. do you know if all students who meet the requirements at the end of sophomore year get into med school (of course, provided that they continue to do well academically)?

Ahhh, so there's no real guaranteed admission into the medical school?

i believe 98% of students accepted into the program go to the medical school. You can apply to other med schools, but doing so removes you from the guaranteed program. You need to really mess up to get dropped from the program, like get in trouble with the law or drop below a 3.5 GPA. As for the interview, it seems to be just a formality, but im not 100% sure. You would have to be like Kumar in "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle" in order to mess up the interview.

Haha, GREAT movie.

rehan, what were your stats?

My GPA's around 3.8 unweighted, 4.2 weighted and SAT is around 1500, but I'm not sure if I'll get accepted, because i don't have a 4.0...

My GPA's 3.86 unweighted and I've gotten quite a few med interviews already.
