SLU Medical Scholars Program

hey guys, can someone explain how the admisson process works for this particular program. I see that i would first have to apply for undergrad admission at slu by regular decision. then is there a separte application for medical scholars? are there additonal essays? also, does this program require any teacher’s recommendations? thank you so much!

here is what it says on the website:

Applying to the Program:
Students who meet the minimum requirements for consideration and who have submitted their application for freshman admission should apply separately for the Medical Scholars Program. Completed applications for both admission and the Medical Scholars Program should be submitted by December 1 to be eligible for priority consideration. After December 1, applications will be considered on a space-available basis.

There is a link on the website where to click to start the application.

here is the website for SLU’s Medical Scholar’s program:
[Medical Scholars Program : Saint Louis University : SLU](http://www.slu.edu/x12904.xml)

Also can people who are applying for the program this year,for fall 2010 term, post their stats here or updates…thanks!

sweet got undergrad acceptance today…now waiting for med scholars program decision

hi Smarty99 - did they give any scholarship yet for SLU

Hey, when you guys applied for medical scholars was it short? I applied online and it didnt seem like a very complete application… asked for GPA and Test scores but that was it. Do they email you a more in depth application or do they also consider your information sent on the regular applications.

ajaysingh- sry for in incredibly late response…haha…wasn’t following this thread. ya they gave me $15,000 on the spot. w/ financial aid/fafsa n stuff, it seems like an affordable tuition for me. im think med scholar is worth it.

rmcmillan- ya the app was easy. its how apps should be. :)

are there any high school class requirements for the med scholars program? because i know for some other programs, they require a year of art and a year of computer science.

and to anyone who was accepted or has any insight on this topic, do they like medical extracurriculars or do they like to see a person with “well rounded interests?”

Ajaysingh— I got a scholarship for 15000 like smarty99…so does that mean we have higher chances …

rmcmillan— i called them like in august and i remember them telling me that the med school only looks at ur stats while the undergrad looks at everything…which makes me very scared

indiya— i think they like people with medical extracurriculars but have you can have others like i have yas (young authors society ) which i am a vice pres. of…it can’t hurt…but do have more med stuff.

[[[rmcmillan— i called them like in august and i remember them telling me that the med school only looks at ur stats while the undergrad looks at everything…which makes me very scared ]]]

so does this mean that assuming you get into SLU undergrad, then the med scholars program only looks at your GPA and SAT, not your extracurriculars?

srry for long wait…but yea they only look at the sat and gpa (according to wat i heard) but u should still continue ur extracurriculars…just in case and they may consider that to make a final decision…when they narrow it from the pool they get…

darkknight - please stop spreading ur uninformed, incorrect comments. NO medical schools will ever just look at scores and gpa and I will like to tell you that I am 100% sure. Whoever you talked to was either A) uninformed B) not a real admissions officer.

please try to call and ask again and you will be surprised at what they say. They DO NOT want bookworms; in fact, no BS/MD program does, not even HPME and PLME. They look for people that will make GOOD and SMART doctors, not just smart doctors.

lastly, stop the hypothetical pondering. you are just continuing the sterotype of the nervous high school student who is smart, but has no self-confident.

Paki786:

I called a Saint Louise Univ. this summer and right before I applied to a women named Alice. She said to me that the undergraduate admissions will look at everything and wants a well rounded person so SAT+GPA+Extraciriculars are equally important. But she said the medical school will look PRIMARlY at SAT + GPA and NOT the essays we send the undergraduate admissions only because of the number of people that apply and the spots they have. Now when I heard that I was quite suprised as well and didn’t believe her and I still can’t believe that myself, but that is what I was informed from the direct source. This person was not UNINFORMED or NOT A REAL ADMISSIONS OFFICER to my knowledge because I got the information from the SLU website. That policy makes me mad, cuz its a bad thing for me cuz i have a 1360. Now assuming that you went through this process and you are at SLU i would say you are correct, but that doesn’t change what I heard from the direct source. So like said I would still continue my extracurricular work.

Secondly, " no medical school only looks at only numbers" is false. University of Southern Alabama’s BA/MD program’s application asks for 4 things…

Completed Application for Admission, submitted with the $35 application fee;

Official high school transcript, showing grades through the junior year, mailed from the high school directly to the USA Office of Admissions;

Official ACT or SAT scores; mailed directly from the testing agency to the USA Office of Admissions (Note: USA’s ACT Code: 0059; SAT Code: 1880);

Completed application for the Early Acceptance Program. Click here here to print the application for the Early Acceptance Program.

and in this entire applicaion there is not a single refrence to a resume or essay its all personal info and stats. I am 100% sure of this because I went through the process of applying to this university. There are several others that have this same method of selecting students.

I am pretty sure Univ.of South Alabama has interviews tho. Look at the past year people statistics…people will 30 ACT etc got in, while people with 34’s etc. were rejected. Shows 1 thing: SLU med scholars programs wants more than scores

As a high school student, how do you become involved with opportunities like this. . .in most cases, you’re not even 18?

I GOT IN!!! by mail today…happy, but still wanting to get second opinions on this program.

I got my acceptance letter in the mail today :D

high-five soccergirl. going there for sure? it sort of seems a bit shaky program to me.

as of now, i guess it’s a big possibility…
My friends in the program think that they’ve made a good decision, and the residency matches for slu’s med school seem promising…but I know what you mean.
I think I’ll wait a little longer to see what other acceptances (if any) i’ve received.

where else did u apply?
