SLU vs. Binghamton University, SUNY

I have been accepted by both schools for undergraduate. My major will be business. It’s really hard for me to choose from either one of them because both schools are my favorite… I think SLU has better academic reputation than Binghamton University. But Binghamton U is much more well-known than SLU. Can anyone give me any advises? Oh and which school has better equestrian program? I love horseback riding although I only ride for couple months haha

My daughter was accepted to both and was heavily recruited by both schools for sports. She has decided on SLU. They are both excellent schools but with the financial aid she got, SLU is only a bit more expensive than Bing. She loves the location and small school atmosphere.
If you are into the outdoors, SLU is the way to go. They have all kinds of activities there. I dont know about equestrian and Bing but I do believe that SLU has a program.
SLU is well known for its networking between alumni and students. I think you will have not issues with SLU being less known than Bing.
BTW - My son goes to Bing and loves it! Both are great choices. You are in a good position!

my son is a junior at SLU and my daughter is a sophomore at Bing. both are extremely happy with their choices. SLU has a lot more small classes where you get to know your teachers and my son got a teaching assistantship after freshman year. my daughter is happy but she has huge classes, and nobody knows what her major is.SHe has found her group with ultimate frisbee and radio. it’s hard to compare but my son will have more debt than my daughter so there’s that.

I consider myself a worldly person from New England. I know nothing about SUNY Bing. Our daughter attends SLU. I have always known about SLU. Do SUNY schools have name recognition outside of NY ?

Unusual to have a few families with students at Binghamton and at SLU. The first few posts were from a few months ago. No SUNYs don’t have much name recognition outside of NY.The only one that might have a little is Stony Brook. If it were my relative I’d want the person at a school that puts a premium on educating students rather than one where the administration could really care less. I’d prefer a school where students can actually take the classes they need to take. Now there has been construction at Binghamton for a long time. During the same time, classes were over enrolled and students were shut out of classes they needed and the faculty student ratio was appalling and there were long lines for advising. And well you get the picture. I believe that this was the year they were supposed to finally have the resources needed to accommodate the number of students they started taking before they had things in place. Would be nice to know if all that is resolved. If not, I’d not recommend a student attend Binghamton even if that student were paid to attend.

“I consider myself a wordly person from New England. I know nothing about SUNY Bing.” (#3)

There’s not necessarily any reason you need to know about an OOS university such as Bing if your family is accustomed to either in-state publics or private colleges such as the appealing SLU. However, it’s worth noting that Binghamton has higher SAT scores than any New England public university that I know of.

SLU has a top equestrian team in the ISHA. They have won the National title multiple times and it’s considered a varsity sport. Got that reason it’s difficult to make the team.

I don’t know if you have to board horses or want to do Ocala to get on the team it its format is similar to IEA high school teams where you ride in a specific class and based on time and ribbons you move up a class. Some riders get on with little riding experience as they need walk-trot riders.

You can take lessons during the semester but it may be limited to flat work. Other schools might have a competition team and a recreational team but not SLU.
