I am looking to be study music (piano), probably performance, as an undergrad. What I'm looking for is a preferably small liberal arts school with a conservatory attached or a good music program, in canada or the us. I may also want to pursue a double degree in physics or astronomy, any colleges with good physics and astronomy programs too would be perfect. The kind of places I am considering are Lawrence university, Mount Allison university, Gettysburg college, st olaf, hartt school of music, crane school of music at SUNY potsdam, carnegie mellon school of music. Any suggestions on other places or what you think of those colleges?

Williams: Not a conservatory, but small liberal arts college, excellent music, many performance opportunities, excellent physics, small but notable astronomy program. Double majors are common.

Peabody is a conservatory at Johns Hopkins.

I’d consider recommending Rice, though I think it would be very difficult to double-major in music and physics at Rice and most other schools. Why is that something you want to pursue, anyway?

Perhaps Oberlin? I have a friend also at Gettysburg.

Check out Lawrence in Wisconsin

Oberlin is top-notch for a high quality liberal arts college attached to a high quality conservatory. Many students double major in music and something else. Others major in a liberal arts discipline and take music lessons and use practice rooms at the conservatory.

There are many many discussions of pursuing a double degree in the Music Major Forum. Please thoroughly browse (search) all the threads there. [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums)

Be sure to check out Bard College Conservatory - all students in the conservatory are required to get a second degree in the college. The piano faculty is amazing - Peter Serkin, Richard Goode, Jeffrey Kahane, Melvin Chen, Jeremy Denk. The physics department is very small, and the course offerings are limited but I’ve heard wonderful things about the professors from current students. However, note that admission to the conservatory for a pianist is at the tippy-top international level.

I also second (or third?) the recommendations for Lawrence and Oberlin. I know a current student at Lawrence getting a double degree in music and physics.

If you are female, Smith. Small LAC, not conservatory, but good music, good sciences in general, though I’m not familiar with their physics offerings.
