Our list is Andover, Exeter, Milton, Concord, Groton, Deerfield, sps and we're thinking our D should also be considering another smaller school (like Concord). Pomfret is looking very attractive. What other academically elite school(s), preferably within about an hour of Boston, should we be looking at? Thank you!

aricat, have you looked at or considered Middlesex. If you have any questions regarding MX, PM me

St. Marks is worth a look. It was very high on my daughter's list when she was applying. In the end she decided against it, mostly because their sports requirement couldn't accomodate her individual sport. We thought they had a strong math program and liked the smaller student body.

Any in the ISL--those are the well-known Boston schools, (excepting, of course, Andover, and a few others.)

St. Mark's is a good suggestion.

I haven't seen these schools but I've heard they are worthy of consideration:
Brooks, Lawrence Academy and The Governor's Academy. There is a school in Dedham -- Noble and Greenough -- that offers a 5-day boarding option. It is supposed to have a very high academic standard.

N and G has a very small boarding population. If you're looking for a day school N and G would fit. If you're looking for a boarding experience, N and G will probably not work. In either case it's a very very good school. In fact most all ISL schools are very very good. Good Luck with your search.

I wouldn't consider Andover or Exeter small when it comes to boarding schools. Both have over 1,000 students each. Most other boarding schools have less than 500.

Milton Academy is practically right in Boston and is about 50% boarding
Tabor Academy is about an hour, maybe a bit more, south of Boston
Middlesex is about 40 minutes outside of Boston

MOAK, I think he/she was looking for a smaller school than Milton.
By the way, I have driven from Middlesex to Boston. I go to the Alewife station in Cambridge ( ~25 minute drive from MX) then take the train to boston, it's like 4 -5 stops away. Quite easy.

You might also consider Dana Hall--all girls

MOAK, I wish Dana Hall had a greater boarding pop. currently at ~40%, is that correct? I also like Concord, but again ~40% boarding.

we were supposed to go visit concord but after really checking learned that only 100 some kids board. again, if we lived right near by that would be fine.

it looks like a great school though.

can you clarify what you mean by elite?

You guys are great. Thank you for your thoughts on this.
To clarify a couple of things - we are looking to ADD one or two more small BSs to the list which we see is weighted towards the very large ones. And by 'elite' we mean academically superior because she tests and performs at the highest levels and is really highly motivated, self-motivated. She is asking for the toughest.

Take a look at Middlesex and Groton. Groton is a bit further from Boston but, still within driving distance.

Would she consider one of the single sex schools? Miss Porter's, Emma Willard, and Westover are all excellent academically.

Emma Willard is a girls bs with around 300 girls and is 175 miles west of Boston. It has great academics and a amazing campus. I might be going there.

First thing that came to mind is Groton.

Elite: YES
Small: YES
Near Boston: YES

If you really mean within an hour of Boston, then
Exeter, Groton, Deerfield, and sps do not qualify.

Groton is only about 30 miles from Boston. Exeter is a little over 50 miles. I think both should be considered. It would seem arbitrary to not consider SPS since it's about 1 1/2 hours from Boston. Deerfield and NMH are just under 2 hours. Unless you plan on commuting to Boston, these schools still seem to be within a reasonable distance as well. Most schools have fairly regular trips to Boston anyway.
