Small Ibanking Firms

How do the smaller Ibanking firms compare to the larger ones. I noticed lot of small LLCs offering Ibanking jobs in the financial area in Manhattan(Park Ave ect). Anyone know the deal?

Smaller firms tend to work on smaller deals or specialize in certain areas. For example, some smaller banks specialize solely in M&A and have really no other operations, etc. Some might also focus/specialize in a certain industry. In addition, a lot of the smaller firms tend to be regional players focusing on certain parts of the country/world. There are some smaller yet extremely prestigious firms, like Lazard, that are just as good as the bulge brackets, do the same kind of deals, etc. Some of these firms will pay less if they are regional firms while some pay more but expect more out of you (i.e. Lazard is known for having some of the highest compensations but they work you much more than the bulge bracket firms).

Here is a list of some of the smaller players:
-Adams, Harkness, & Hill
-Anderson & Strudwick
-Brown Brothers Harriman
-Cantor Fitzgerald
-Canaccord Adams
-CIBC World Markets
-Cowen and Company
-Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein
-Ferris, Baker Watts, Inc.
-Friedman Billings Ramsey
-Greenhill & Company
-Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin
-Jefferies & Co.
-Keefe, Bruyette & Woods
-Lazard
-Mesoamerica Investments
-Miller Buckfire & Co.
-Newbury Piret
-Rothschild
-ThinkEquity Partners, LLC
-Thomas Weisel Partners
-Wedbush Morgan Securities
-Wells Fargo Securities
-Westminster Securities Corporation

If I missed any feel free to add...

Evercore
Perella Weinberg (hasn't started yet)
Simmons & Co. (energy focused)

Are all these firm located in NYC? Does anyone if any are based out of Philadelphia?

good call dcfca (which i hope the dcf doesn't stand for discounted cash flow lol) I forgot Evercore.

Dannyk: I believe Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. is based in Philadelphia, or at least they used to be...don't know if they changed their HQ to NYC.

Thanks for both of your expertise. Can one still do Ibanking in a branch office of a New York based firm or do the branch firms do other things?

you can definitely do ibanking at the branch offices of many firms in cities like LA, SF, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Boston, DC, many of the European offices (London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, etc.) and other offices around the world - all depends on which firm you work for. Many of the boutiques or smaller banks tend to have only 2-4 offices worldwide (NYC, London, SF, LA most likely). Bulge brackets have them all over.

Branch firms tend to focus on other things.

Case in point, a lot of BB's have their energy/oil and gas groups operating in Houston because that's where most of the Oil and Gas industry is.

SF is where most tech groups are located.

Some offices are better than their NY counterparts, such as UBS LA and CSFB LA, both of these firms tend to place very well in private equity

Doesn't the Bank of New York have an investment banking division?

this seems counterintuitive. why is this so? is it a less competitive region or some other factor?

CSFB acquired DLJ and killed the uber-competitive deal hungry culture, so some of the people who enjoyed those aspects went to UBS in LA to maintain that culture, others didn't.

Basically that lead to UBS LA becoming a really really strong shop on the west coast

Also, the DLJ investment bankers in L.A. were born from the very hungry and aggressive Drexel Burnham Lambert shop there, but I'm not sure how many of the Drexel guys are there or whether the Drexel culture still lives. It was alive and kicking there as recently as the mid to late 90's.

how can i learn more about the botique shops in LA and southern california?

Blackstone for New York. :)

Brown Brothers is based in Philadelphia. Also the investment management divisions of Lehman, UBS, Goldman, and others are in Philly. :)

If one wanted to work in a branch office would he/she still need to interview and apply through the NYC office?

depends on the firms...some handle recruiting on a corporate level and then once accepted you kind of are assigned/choose an office...some do recruiting by branch...it all depends.
