Small/Medium Size Business/Language School?

Hey guys,

I am a freshman at a large public university that has around 30,000 students. I really like that right now I am able to double major in Business (Marketing) and Spanish and get a certificate in International Business. I really want to continue Business and Spanish.

That being said, I don't really appreciate the atmosphere at my college. It is WAY too big for my taste, and the students that attend it just seem to care about drinking rather than studying. Don't get me wrong, I love having a good time... but my school usually ranks in the top three party schools and I just don't admire that.

I'm looking for a smaller to medium size business school where I can continue studying Spanish and maybe even minor in something like International Relations or political science? I'd like the university to be high caliber - not ivy league - but something like Middlebury or other liberal arts colleges (if only they had colleges like that for business.)

I've done a lot of looking and I figured it was time to come to the amazing community here. If it helps, I graduated high school in the top 3%, had a 4.4 weighted and a 3.95 unweighted, and my college GPA (with 62 credits... I came in with a lot of college classes!) is 3.9. ACT is high. Extracurriculars include a lot of leadership roles.

Thanks :)

How much can you afford? If you’re looking for a decent Spanish and business program, Emory is a good choice. Note that the extremely well regarded Goizuetta Business School is a competitive admit, but it’s relatively easy to get in; they accept about 70% of sophomore applicants, and most of those applicants had about a 3.6 (Emory has a large amount of grade inflation)

I’ll check Emory out… I missed that one.

Obviously I will want as much merit based aid as possible… I don’t qualify for any need based aid. I wouldn’t worry about money though… that’s something to worry about later in the process!

Generally speaking, merit aid is lousy for transfer students, so don’t expect to get any. Talk with your parents about the budget, and focus on colleges and universities that will be affordable without aid.

Take a look around your current university. Do the students get more serious and drink less as they advance through their college years? Are there any groups of not-a-drunken-party-monster students to which you could attach yourself? How good are the internship/job placement services and study abroad options that are available. You may be able to make this university work for you after all.

Does your school have an honors college that you could enroll in? It will help surround you with like-minded peers.
Cost will be an issue going from a state school to private, especially if you don’t qualify for FA.
These tables show stats on merit aid (Two tables - LAC versus universities). Use this to get started but you will need to research further to see if transfers are eligible for merit aid.

I actually am in the honors program, and on top of that, I live in an all honors hall. The vibe is the same… I just feel like I don’t like the atmosphere at the university in general. I’m also in a social fraternity (I do like to have fun sometimes) and I’ve made plenty of friends, so it’s not lack of social inclusion.

If anybody had any suggestions for other universities for me to look at… I’d appreciate it!

Try using the college search SuperMatch here on CC. Put in all 3 subjects and specify that you require all 3, then the size of the school (again say required) and any other considerations. By default it gives you the top 20 matches but you can increase it at the top.

So I’ve been looking around (the SuperMatch gave me a lot of weird colleges…) and I like what I see from Butler University. I would be able to continue Marketing and Spanish. I like how they have a semester internship program in Washington D.C., and their study abroad program seems solid.

Does anybody know anything the business porgram at Butler? The Butler forum here doesn’t seem to be active… :/

Also… any other suggestions for universities that I should look into?

Thanks guys!

Butler is a solid university that is better known in the Midwest. Try sending a PM to the people at the Butler forum, or run a more general search for it and see what turns up.

American, Case Western, Tulane, WUSTL, College of William and Mary, Carnegie Mellon, Bucknell, U.Richmond, B.C., Notre Dame, Fordham, Lehigh.
SuperMatch sometimes throws in an outlier, but if you always select “Must have” for your criteria it does a better job. I looked using small and medium sized, with selective and very selective for “getting in”, as well as Business and Spanish, and your GPA. Also, at the top select 50 results otherwise you only get 20 of what they consider the best matches.
