Small "Outside" Scholarships for Current College Students?

Hello all. A bit of a weird request, but can anyone recommend a website where I can find scholarships for ongoing college students that offer smaller amounts? (~500$ or less)

Specifically, I want to find scholarships which mail the reward check to your preferred mailing address. Weird thing to ask about, but....yeah.

Help appreciated.

Why don’t you want the check sent to your college directly to be credited against your student account? Inquiring minds want to know…

Long story short? Checks that are directed credited to my student account diminish the amount I get from a certain scholarship I have. In the end, I’m still short on fund to buy my books and supplies (had to borrow a few hundreds from my father), as well as basic living supplies. I asked another student in my school in the same situation as myself, and he suggested scholarships that are sent directly to you, since those won’t diminish the reward I get from my original scholarship, meaning I’ll be able to buy my books without borrowing this time.

It wouldn’t be such a problem usually, except recent misfortunes concerning my family means that I won’t have a home to go back to, and have to live completely independently. Hence, I need to be able to do this all myself without asking for help from my family.

There’s a lot more to it, but that’s the long and short of it.

I’m sorry to hear about your situation - that is alot to handle. But, it may be contrary to the terms of your other merit and/or need-based aid to not report all scholarships you receive.

Can you meet with a financial aid officer to explain your circumstances and ask that your aid be increased slightly since it is burden to your family given the circumstances (and things are so bad that you won’t have a home to go back to)?

Aside from the fact that this is dishonest…

There aren’t likely any outside scholarships that would be checks sent to you as a current student. It is VERY hard to get outside awards as a current student. My younger son got TWO as a current student, and they got sent to the school…likely the orgn has to do it that way for THEIR tax purposes.

I have contacted the Campus Leader for my scholarship organization, and he suggested the same thing. I’m hopeful that they might help me out, but I’m not exactly sure. This is just a back up just in case.

Believe me, I know it’s dishonest. But my options are running out quickly. All the jobs that I have been to expressed no desire to have to work around my hectic schedule. I can’t exactly change my schedule since all the classes are full now. At the same time, I can expect little to no income from my parents or siblings. I also need to find off campus housing that can be year round (including summer), since I pretty much will live here at school year round from now on.

I don’t really want to do this. If you can provide some counsel, I would greatly appreciate any help.

Have you looked into contests? My D has won several of these over the years and they cash our directly to the winner. There are lots of poetry and general writing contests for teens and young adults. Not easy wins but something.

Certainly talk to financial aid… not just the people associated with the scholarship. Sometimes they have funds for these types of emergency situations.

I take it you’ve looked specifically for campus work? Some schools have few but others have lots of openings for students even if they don’t qualify for work study. Now might be the time to look into becoming an RA unless you plan on living off campus next fall. RA’s generally get paid pretty decently and have some flexibility in schedule. Work is really the only sure way you can make enough to put in your own bank not only for books but for your living situation for summer (pretty much everyone will require a first, last and deposit.)
