I'm looking into double majoring in math and cs now. I'd prefer smaller schools, since usually they have small class sizes, classes taught by professors, etc. I would appreciate a range of schools (I think UCSD would be a match for me...UCD would be low match) Which small schools are good? Thanks!

California Institute of Technology.

You should also consider Rice.

I don’t think I’d be able to get into CalTech, but I’ll look into Rice. Also, my parents want me to apply to the UCs as a financial safety. I’d be looking at UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCD, UCI. How are they for math/CS double major?

really small, socal, and lots of Gates/microsoft money: Harvey Mudd

Since you seem to be in-state, consider an early,
non-binding application to CSU - San Luis Obispo. Keep in mind that unlike other CSU’s admission is impacted and can be more difficult than many of the UC. SLO is noted for both its math and sciences and you could double major. The school is smaller than a UC, and the town of SLO is charming.
You might also consider a school like Rose-Hulman or Case Western, which could possible provide enough FinAid to be comparable in price to a UC.

I was looking into Harvey Mudd too, but seems quite hard to get in! I’ll probably apply and see what happens though.

Yes I’m in state. I guess SLO can be a good safety? I’ll look into Rose-Hulman and Case Western.

Carnegie Mellon. Very good computer science program. Very mathy.

Thanks, I’ll look into that too

Wesleyan has a few PHDs or Master’s students in CS, I think, and is LAC-sized. You might want to look into that. URochester is a small university with strong CS.

I don’t think you can call SLO a safetly. Their admissions are all over the place. They’ve been known to reject highly qualified students while accepting students with lower scores and GPAs. Living in SLO’s service area will give you a considerable boost however.

Rose-Hulman.

Clarkson .

I’ll look into Wesleyan, URochester, Rose-Hulman, and Clarkson.

SLO’s service area…where would that be?

Illinois Institute of Technology.

Thanks, I’ll look into that too

Rice, perhaps?

San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County. If you have to ask, then you probably aren’t in it.

Also, maybe WPI and RPI.

Interesting school on the rise is Olin. They are a small engineering school in Mass and is incredibly selective but at the same time seem to have a very holistic admissions approach. Even if you don’t have Caltech numbers you could stand a reasonable chance at Olin.
