Small, southern, non-"party schools"?

Hello! New to CC and wondering if anyone has suggestions of smaller southern schools that tend to be more wholesome/less focused around greek life and partying than typical southern schools like UVA, UNC, Vandy, Duke, etc. I am brainstorming for a younger sibling who is very shy, mild mannered, doesn't party, and isn't really cut out for greek life as I know it to be at any of those schools (I recently graduated from one, was in a sorority, and that was very much my scene, but it is not my sister's). Of course I realize that not EVERYONE at these schools parties or is involved in greek life but my sister would be better off somewhere smaller and less intimidating where those activities are less a part of the culture. Ideal for her would be: small, southern, semi-rural (close to a city or large town but an insulated campus) friendly but still competitive/selective. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

My niece is enjoying Longworth College in rural Va. very much.

What does your sister want to major in?

University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA comes to mind but without knowing your sister’s stats, it’s hard to make suggestions.

She’s only just beginning the college process so we’re just trying to get ideas. She currently attends a very competitive private secondary school and if things keep up the way they’re going she will be on the track for top liberal arts colleges, Ivies and equivalents.

Years ago I spent a Governor’s Gifted program/summer at what was then Mary Washington College! Lovely campus, not-too-large town. Of course, the whole I-95 corridor has grown muchly since then…

I am quite impressed with Belmont in Nashville. Davidson also comes to mind.

The D of a friend went to Centre and really enjoyed it. The mom said they (D and parents) got tons of personal attention. Also maybe Hendrix?

William and Mary might be a fine fit.

mommusic, were you referrring to Longwood U.? Also, is your niece instate or OOS for Longwood? If OOS, did she receive any merit awards?

Davidson is a great choice.

Duh. Yes, Longwood! And I guess it is a U. now. I am remembering the days when it was a college. Not remembering well enough, for sure.

She is instate. Va. is fortunate to have an excellent and varied public system.

What state (of the U.S.!) are you in, if I may ask?

How about Rhodes?

Agnes Scott.

Rhodes (where my D is having a wonderful, life-changing experience) deserves its work hard/party hard rep. Although Greek life is NOT very exclusive , it is substantial. No place is perfect for every kid. P.M. me for more info. I’m always happy to share.

I was thinking Emory.

Great suggestion, mini.

I’m from VA and Bridgewater College comes to mind. It is in a small town outside of Harrisionburg where JMU is. Also Emory and Henry outside of Abington is a similar school. Both are small private schools

Sewanee is a fairly highly ranked LAC. Greek life is present but I hear it is not particularly exclusive. With only 1500 students it can’t be

I have heard some nice things about Bridgewater College, AngieA.

mommusic, ahh, thanks for the info. I assume that you were asking the OP their family resides in, but in case you were asking me, New Jersey.

I’ll second the suggestion of William and Mary - Greeks not in the majority. I went there many years ago and was in a sorority but we were definitely in the minority.

Sewanee is a huge party school with a big drinking culture. (I like the place, don’t get me wrong, just not for the OP)
