Smaller campus colleges with art as well as conservation programs

Hello,
My daughter is looking for a college that would be relatively easy to navigate (chronic medical condition) that has a solid art program (illustration primarily) that also has a good program in conservation or environmental science. She is unsure of what she would like to focus on so my thoughts are that a liberal arts college would be best. I would appreciate any bought on this as well as some ideas for colleges to put on a list

Thank you.

What are her stats? Any location preference? Cost considerations?

She is a junior, hasn’t taken her ACT yet. Not taking any honors classes or AP classes either. She will be taking AP pre calc next year as well as a University or Syracuse English class, but she has been taken a bit off guard by an illness that she hasn’t truly recovered from two years ago and missed 85+ days of school last year. She was still able to mai rain honor roll but we have been careful about pacing her with regard to her courseload in order to preserve any improvement and avoid any crashes.

Prior to her illness she was on track to go to college for art but has no portfolio and in not sure any longer if she would like to pursue a career in the arts. She loves animals, nature and is passionate about the environment and she has an interest in psychology.
We would prefer a warmer climate as she is more symptomatic in the colder weather.

Take peek at Eckerd College, LAC of roughly 2,000 students. Strong Visual Arts program, excellent Environmental Studies and Marine Science, also adding an Animal Studies major. Quite a bit to offer in her areas of interest wrapped up in a nice warm Florida gulf coast bow. Small, open and easy to navigate campus with individualized attention.

Thank you! Sounds great. I will start researching tonight!

The University of Redlands in Redlands, California. It’s about an hour east of Los Angeles. It has environmental studies, environmental science, and studio art majors. Total enrollment (undergraduate and graduate and professional programs) is about 5,000. It is flat but is within view of very beautiful mountains. It occasionally is cool but never cold.

Ah… We LOVE California. I will take a look for sure!

Contact me if you want any additional info on Eckerd. My 2 children graduated from there. They just revamped their entire counseling, coaching, mentor, accessibility program and opened a new center: www.eckerd.edu/excellence/

The new visual arts building opened in February: www.eckerd.edu/visualarts/why-visual-arts-at-eckerd/

They have an office of sustainability and it is a very “green” campus. Well known for the environmental studies program: eckerd.edu/environmental-studies/why-environmental-studies-at-eckerd/

Animal studies major is new this Fall: eckerd.edu/animal-studies/

She sounded pretty interested when I shared your post with her. I am assuming she won’t get any merit money because she does not have the most rigorous courseload. We probably will not qualify for aid.
It does sound like the right kind of fit for her though. It would give her options and a chance to explore.

She still has a chance for some decent merit: eckerd.edu/admissions/financial-aid/types/#scholarship
