smaller class size for selected honor program,Berkeley

Hi can some one tell me what is the special small classes for the honors program that are in Berkeley.I have of people talking about some high school senior students get selected for honors where u have a smaller class size compared to the regular class which is 200-300 in size.
How does one get selected for it?

Berkeley has honors courses which are smaller than the regular courses.

For example, fall 2011 Math 54 (Linear Algebra and Differential Equations) had 422 and 313 seat lectures, but Math H54 (honors version) had a 37 seat lecture.

Physics 7A had two 220 seat lectures, while Physics H7A had one 50 seat lecture:

Thanks, so how does a freshman get in to a honors class? Do they apply or gets invited?

You just sign up. Honors freshman and sophomore level math courses are easy to get into, because it seems that few students dare to take honors math courses (and the best math students may have already taken the college sophomore level math courses in community college while they were in high school). Honors physics courses seem to get full, even though they are larger. They do have a placement test given in the first week of class for the first honors physics course.
