Hi, Can anyone suggest some colleges in the south that would be helpful for a boy with executive function issues? My son likes Auburn but I worry he will get lost. He’s interested in computer science and engineering. Looking for a smaller college that will help him transition. Thank you!!
I’m not sure about the resources for executive function issues but for a smaller environment with good engineering options, check out UA-Huntsville.
Sewanee has Comp Sci but only pre-Engineering. Appalachian State has Comp Sci and some kind of Engineering Design.
Tennessee-Chattanooga.
11k students
Computer Science and Engineering
Mosiac program may be helpful for kid with EFD
Auburn seems to have good resources for executive functioning. Maybe a coach is available

Oglethorpe for CS. Little-known but much-loved gem in Atlanta.
Berry College in Rome, GA, about an hour north of Atlanta, is consistently ranked one of the most beautiful campus in the U.S., has a CS major and a very nurturing vibe. It’s an interesting school.
If he is Christian, he is guaranteed not to get lost at Covenant College in Chattanooga. (Not that non-Christians would get lost, but it is a Christian college).
I know Indiana is definitely not South but Terre Haute is only about 100 miles north of Kentucky… and Rose-Hulman is a small STEM-focused school (less than 2500 undergrads) that could be fantastic for a student like your son - possibly worth pushing the geographic boundary for.
In the TX/OK direction, maybe SMU and/or U of Tulsa could be worth a look. Agree with the UA Huntsville suggestion above, as well.
College of Charleston, CNU, Guilford, Birmingham Southern, Wofford.
I was going to suggest Wofford and Guilford as well. Not sure what services are available but I sense that both try to make sure students don’t get lost.
I am new here and am so thankful to all of you for your great ideas!! Thank you!!
You should definitely look at Rose Holman. What about Missouri S&T?
Birmingham Southern is an amazing small southern college. Definitely check it out.
Cost constraints and state of residency?
How small?
MO, TN, and AR have small engineering focused public schools.
Historically black schools tend to be small to medium size, and some have engineering, like Tuskegee (private, in AL), PVAMU (in TX), NC A&T, and AAMU (in AL). (You do not have to be black to attend a historically black school.)
NC A &T Mom here!!! A&T is a NC public in the UNC system and a HBCU. (my kiddo is a URM but not AA)
Love, love A&T campus, cafeteria (best ever!) alum support and the engineering program (ABET) provides so much one on one compared to NCSU’s mech e program…was able to compare as son and his bro and sister took classes there and elsewhere (bro has 3 STEM degrees from NCSU).
Their joint nano-engineering school with UNC Greensboro, that’s located on NC A&T campus is new and offers a grad program built on the mech e program from A&T.
They do offer merit scholarships in addition to financial aid.
Have any questions please ask.

I realize this is a thread from back in October but just thought I would mention that the Auburn SKILL program is a for fee service which provides academic coaching for students with executive functioning challenges and is worth looking into. As for smaller southern schools, in addition to ones already mentioned, I would suggest looking into Mercer in Macon GA and Furman in South Carolina.
davidson in charlotte, NC - i think its about 30 miles form charlotte
