FIN AID packages were smaller than expected. I would assume most scholarships or grants would be gone by now. Any suggestions..? Even to cover books, etc.

One thing that you have to know is that there are billions of dollars in tiny scholarships that go unclaimed each year. While 15% of these are based off of employee-based grants, that still leaves 85% that are never even applied for because most kids assume that they won’t qualify, or that they only go to minorities or to the very poor, when in fact these are available for everyone. The only caveat is that they are often fairly small, usually about $500 - $2000 (upper maximum) and are often for only one year. However, on sites like Fastweb.com you can apply for dozens of these and you are likely to get at least one or two scholarships; not enough to fill a huge gap but enough to cover books and other incidentals if you budget correctly.

Thanks…that is the type of thing I am looking for…

Are you a senior? Have you asked your guidance office for a packet of local scholarship apps? It’s much easier to win local awards and, although they’re generally $1K or less, a few can sure ease those first year book/dorm room/new computer expenses!

I feel like its misleading to tell someone they are “likely to get at least 1 or 2 scholarships” off the fastweb website. I spent over a year scouring fastweb on a weekly basis and applying for every scholarship possible and did’nt get any. In fact I don’t know anybody who has ever received a scholarship from that site or any other random internet site.
