Smart Brown Freshman

First year Herbert Mason Hedberg is named one of the 20 teens who will change the world. He put his brain to work and figured out that porphryin, a natural compound derived from phosphorus, inhibits the spread of some cancers, including breast and lung cancers. He’s patenting his work and hopes a biotechnology company will produce a treatment based on his research.

That's pretty awesome. I don't know how you get to that point in high school though, he must have had quite a number of resources at his fingertips.

How do you know he goes to Brown?

Hedberg is a Brown PLME student and the Grand Prize winner of the 2004 Intel Science Talent Search.

Argh, I hate people like him. I feel like such a waste of life compared to people who are so uber successful at the age of 18. lol.

Actually, he sounds like a cool kid. (Obviously.) I'd love to meet him next year.

he was on the today show last week (maybe two weeks ago?) and yeah. i would just reiterate that he rules so hard. haha.

Obviously the kid would be admitted everywhere.

The standard method for analyzing telomerase inhibitors requires a multiple-day procedure involving telomerase isolation and hazardous reagents, but Mason's analysis, using a novel dialysis chamber that he invented (provisional patent application) and telomerase synthesized by in vitro gene expression, makes analysis by UV absorbance possible after an approximately 10-minute incubation.

What hs student has access to the microtech to even do this?

That's what I'm wondering. How can a high school student have those types of gradstudent-level materials available to him? At least not in a public school, or at least not in MY public school. lol

That's so cool. And yeah, every time you hear about one of these kids who do amazing things like this, or the ones that graduate college when they're 15, don't you just hang your head in shame?

Exactly what I was thinking when I read that, haha

With a name like Herbert Mason Hedberg, he's probably from a friggin rich WASP family that sent him to a spectacular private school and gave him tons of funding and paid real scientists to give him ideas and help

no, seriously

Well, if you want to get technical, I don't think he's a WASP. The etymology of his last name suggests that he is Jewish, German, or both.

But it is possible that he is a wealthy one of those. :D

He's probably like a URM from a ghetto somewhere who built a lab out of a homemade chemistry set...

...or -- as I first suspected -- he created his telomerase inhibitor dialysis chamber from a flex straw and a paperclip a la McGyver and performed in-vitro gene expression modification with a piece of construction paper, a razor, and a rubber band...

He's just that smart.

dont hate. he worked hard and probably has natural talent. why are u trying to put him down just because you're not as successful as him?

Isn't that usually the name of the game in this type of situation?

I'm not hating! I was giving a contrasting situation to those suggested above mine as referring to the origin and funding of the genius who is the subject of this thread. Made in fun only. Grow a sense of humor.

I have a friend who met him at some sciency thing and she said he's a nice guy.

Impressive! I have nothing to do with Brown, but I decided to drop by and see the hype :)

I find it strange, however, that they included Jesse McCartney. He volunteers at a hospital....... well, so do I, but I'm obviously not a rich and somewhat famous tv-show star. shrug it is Teen People after all.

mischa barton sucks

he is a really nice guy.

and he went to a completely run of the mill public school (north attleboro high school in MA)
