Is it a good idea to retake the SAT if I have a high score (almost 2400) with old SAT + Writing SAT II and if there is no way I'll be able to get that on the new SAT? Will colleges view this is as me being scared or something? Plus, I can't apply to UCs

i'm in the same position you are. since i live in California, i would really like the UCs to fall back on if i don't get into Stanford or MIT or Caltech. however, the new SAT isn't that different from the old one. i don't expect myself to get a perfect on the new one, but i'll be satisfied in the 2300 range. as for being scared, i don't think so cuz a lot of people in class of '06 are planning on only taking the old SAT. if the UCs mean a lot to you, then take it. if not, then i don't see the point

For those matriculating in 2006, there is a grab bag of requirements. Several colleges will take the old SAT plus SAT II writing. Some will accept the old SAT even without SAT II writing. Some require the new SAT. Almost all colleges require students matriculating in 2007 to take the new SAT I. So the best thing to do is check the websites of the colleges in which you are interested.

If a few colleges on your list require the new SAT, one option is to take the ACT with writing instead of the new SAT. I think all colleges will accept the ACT. You'll have the advantage of being able to report the scores only if they are good. If you have a bad day, you can retake the ACT and report only the best scores. Furthemore, you can choose to report the ACT scores only to colleges which require the new SAT.

If you are in the midwest, taking the ACT probably wouldn't be noticed because most students do take it. If you aren't in the midwest, the admin people may assume that dates for the ACT worked better for you than those for the SAT. Furthermore, my guess is that admin folks are well aware that students who score extemely well on their first SAT test have a high probability of having lower scores the second time, so they'd understand why you didn't wabt to retake it. (In a factual way, not a negative way.)

As an aside, here in the midwest the January SAT test was cancelled at many schools because of bad weather. The TV news had a crawler that announced the ACT (not the SAT) was cancelled at my son's test center. The ACT is so common, the school personnel goofed when calling in the cancellation.

here we're required to take each test (act and sat) once at least. If even 1 college requires the new sat, i would take it or the act, but you would probably need more prep for the act because it's kind of a different type of test

Here's what i recommend, you finish taking all your SAT 2's soon, then send in the old SAT + SAT writing + other SAT 2's to all the schools that will not require teh new SAT. Then in June or October, take the new SAT and send that off to the schools that do require the new one, without sending it to the schools that don't need it.

Of course, if you do ace the new SAT (someone has to - may as well be a cc'er) you can send those scores to the ivies on after you see them.

Wow andrew that is actually very very clever. It's like score choice almost.....WOW! I might do that since I will finish SAT II's this May.

If I take the New SAT and the score is lower than my Old SAT + Writing score, then would colleges look down upon that??

does anyone have an up to date list of which colleges are accepting what? I have the really old kaplan list and was wondering whether there was any newer ones.

collegeboard has a list of about 30 schools maybe.

I emailed bunches of Ivies and the like 1 year ago or so and most said they will accept either or that they are still formulating their policy. UCs are the only ones that hate the old SAT.
