My verbal was horrible and I have to improve it... and the thing that killed me most was vocabulary. People had advised me not to study it cuz they don't think it's worth it (what are the chances that certain words you study will be on the test, after all?) but I have no choice at this point. So I am wondering....

What is the most efficient way to study vocabulary that WILL BE ON THE TEST? I hear barron's has a list of 2,000 words and 10 of them show up on the test. I am willing to spend the time to learn a lot of vocabulary is that's what I have to do to get over a 700, but I want to do it in the smartest possible way. So... what words to I study? Who has the best, most dependable list? Thank you

Barron's hot words for the SAT. I haven't even finished the book and my (practice test) CR scores have gone up. you're not really studying each word individually, just getting a general idea of what it means (for example - 10 words relating to lazy - just remember that they mean lazy and you'll be fine). soooooooo ridiculously helpful. and my vocabulary was TERRIBLE before.

That book really helps, but it doesn't have everything. I didn't know what stupefaction (which was kind of dumb) and vituperation were and I studied from hot words. I think knowing roots and prefixes of words actually helps more than study individual words.

Other than that, brute memorization might be the way to go. Of course, actually using words that you are memorizing in the real world helps the process.

I"m a sohpomore, I just memorize 5 vocabs every day. In the summer, ima read a book called "Sat Vocab for dummies", a lot of people said it helps.
