SMC Registration

I'm taking two courses at SMC next fall, and I've already applied online but the confirmation email they sent me requires that I send my high school transcripts ("This will enable us to best advise you in your course selections"),
attend orientation, and take the math/English placement tests! I'm a fulltime student at El Camino; do I still have to go through all of that? If I do...this blows. I don't see why I have to send high school transcripts- isn't my enrollment at another CC proof enough? Thanks for your help.

green,

u don't need to take math or eng tests if u're taking a class thats is not math or science. Which seems to be the case for u, so u don't need that.

But ask just in case, if u do np. Just bring in ur test scores from ur old cc, they take any cc test scores.

As for HS transcript, i think everyone needs to bring that.

do it ASAP. classes get filled up fast. enrollment started on monday of last week, my enrollment date was wed of last week and i didn't even get my choice of classes. It got filled up. Some might drop though, we'll c.

If u want me to check if a class is still available i can do that. i might even be able to save a class for u. not promising it though b/c it might overlap w/ a class that i have. give me class #s i'll check

Just talk to a counselor to have all your prereq's cleared quickly so you can sign up for classes as soon as possible.

haha, for me last year as a new student, the as soon as possible turned out to be in July.

Wow, thanks for the offer, highschool! That's very generous of you. I'm pretty sure I'm taking Poli Sci 7 with Buckley (2827)...and I'm thinking about Art 1 with Semere (1085). However, I'm not sure if I should even sign up for these courses since El Camino hasn't released its Fall 05 schedule yet, and won't until mid-summer or so (sucks, I know!) So far, I'm just basing my schedule from last fall, which isn't the most accurate gauge, but the best I got. I know that SMC classes fill up fast though, so I was wondering if you could check how many seats are left in those two classes? I think I'll get my transcripts and head to Santa Monica next week and finalize my registration. Thanks for everything!

looks like ur in excellent shape w/ 2827, only 10 out of 80 seats filled

As for art 17 seats out of 125 filled.

No need to worry at all IMO

Those are some huge classes, most classes that i had taken were like 28-35 people maybe except Pol Sci 1.

only wish it were the same case for me... I had third day of enrollement but Ochem got filled in 2 days.

As for when u're driving there, if u're heading from Pico, i am pretty sure there is free parking only for registration. It's not in the parking structure, it's outside.

If not, i recommend parking on a meter on 16 street. Other option is to park in the airport campus and take the shuttle from there. Park about 15 mins walking distance from campus. Or wait for someone close to the campus to leave which might take a while

Thanks, highschool for the great advice. What's your major? Is this your first year?

my major maybe bio, biochem, or chemistry. LOL

Dunno, it's a tough call cause i don't really care. Just needed to take my physics, ochem, bio, chem, calc, physio, antomy, microbio, molecular bio, biochem.

I can achieve that w. different majors really. Trying to c which one is least impacted at UCLA.

Wow highschoolda your enrollment date was last week and you still couldn't get your choice of classes...Makes me a bit worried since the earliest my enrollment date will be is in mid/late August. Think I'll be able to get any decent classes then?

I got all the classes that i needed, but not the teachers that i wanted, which will make a difference between an A and a B.

all depends on the classes that u want.

Green's classes have twice as much capacity and maybe 100% less demand than mine.

Take for example, There are i think 40 english one classes, so u'll get some class, proly a pretty good one.

on smc homepage they now have lists of open classes for fall. Never to early to start checking them w/ ratemyprofessors.com

highschool, what do you think about taking classes with 'Staff' at SMC? Too risky?

no, not really. I don't think there are any really horrible teachers. Yeah it's taking a chance, but u can always drop or something.

Fall is obviously 3.5 month away, they usually put in the teacher like a month away. Keep checking. Very rare cases, but sometimes even teachers change. Happened to me this semester, but it was a good change after 8 weeks we got a new teacher.

highschool, I went to SMC yesterday and registered for my classes without any hitch. Mission accomplished! I really love the campus- the atmosphere, relatively new buildings, cafeteria, student activities, library, safety (I was mugged at my CC) etc.; I might just go here full-time, if only it wasn't for the traffic (took me about half an hour). The counselors were also very helpful, much more so than at my CC. Anyway, thanks again for your advice, and maybe I'll see you around next semester.

right now the atmosphere is a little different than in the begining of the semester. I'd say 20 to 25% less crowded. In the first week of school there are around 60-75 min lines to book stores, parking probs, and things of that nature.

Yeah it is very safe b/c Santa Monica is a very good city.

I do hear that the classes are a little bit more dificult than most CC, so just be ready.

There are a lot of good resources on campus. Free math and science tutoring. Free printing of 150 pages a semester in Cayton. Decent counselors. Clubs and other organizations.

Still a depressing place for me notheless and i can't wait to get out of there.

But i hear it's a good CC compared to most.
