Hey, I'm currently a senior in high school and I am utterly confused about my classes for fall 2010. I live in Northern CA and plan on going to SMC. The problem is that I cannot get personal counseling so I am struggling. The online counseling is not working very well. I want to transfer to UCLA and I plan on joining the scholars program. I am not eligible at the moment because I did not make it to English 1. So, is starting the scholars program late an issue?? Also, I do not know what classes to take besides English and Math. Plan on having twelve units. This is really confusing me and stressing me out. Help. Thanks.

First off, what majors are you looking into?

About the program, you need to take five scholars courses by the end of the Fall semester that you APPLY for schools. Make sure to apply for the scholars program as soon as you’re eligible for English 1 and enroll in as many scholars courses that you should take (don’t just pick random classes, but make sure they fulfill your IGETC or major requirements). Starting late is not an issue, but starting earlier is beneficial. FYI: Scholars courses are not any more difficult (in my experience, anyway) than regular ones. They just have the ‘scholars’ label slapped on them.

Sorry I forgot to mention Psychology major.

Why did you choose Saint Mary’s?

Check Assist.org to see what classes you need to take as a psychology major. If they offer courses you need for scholars (they always have them for Psych 1, I know for sure), then sign up for those.

I think he means santa monica college… you will have to take the math and english classes you placed into, plus a psych class that should be around 12 units right there…

@andrewexd – He says he’s from Northern California, Saint Mary’s is in Moraga, CA (Nothern CA).

Santa Monica College has a Scholars Program specifically for those who want to xfer to UCLA. So I am assuming that he or she is referring to this as opposed to Saint Mary’s College.

It’s a wise choice by nishaf as Santa Monica College has the highest xfers to UCLA by far of all the community colleges, with something like 20% of all cc xfers are from SMC.

It’s a combination of a lot of the Jewish/Persian westside kids along with oos and internationals who flock there, all with the ultimate goal of attending UCLA.

Add those from other parts of the state like him or her who likewise have the same ambitions.

To nishaf:

Did you try to contact someone at SMC, live?

I will check that site. I chose SMC cause I am moving out there for modeling and such. Also they suggested biology for my first semester…?

just use assist.org. SMC’s counseling department is always crowded anyway

@ drax12, yes I tried to contact someone live but students answered and would not allow me to talk to any counselors. They told me to use the online counseling.
